the circumstancen It has always, to be borne In mind that many reported curen of Cancer have bess found not to be cancer at all, What we want to know beyond all doubt first of all is this; • Is it cancer cllaically, and is it cancer. microscopically
WAS THE EXPERIMENTS-WITH, MICE);
But have we not the fact," I asked, "pat sing aside for one moment Professor Morton's treatment of certain cases, that Dr. Beard, of Edinburgh, has cured cancer in mice by the use of trypsin
Dr. Beard has inoculated mice, and the growths have certainly disappeated, but the value of the experiment is handicapped by the fact that these growths in mice also disappear spontaneoudy without the use of trypsin at
"Do they also disappear spontaneously in the human body?
Cases are recorded of tumours disappear ing, but they are very rare.. We do find' cases in which small isolated nodulna hava disap. peared without treatment."
With regard to the different kinds of treat. ment, of which there have been reports from time to time of individual successes, my au thorities said, "We try everything here. There was Dr. Droyen's treatment, for example. We got no results that we could record; but still you use Dr. Drayen gets good results with his serum, despite diber people's failures. Wonder fol cares have also been reported by Otto Schmidt's treatment, and one has heard of re- markable cures in isolated cases in which violei leaves have been used. From time to time we get various cures,' but when they are pat to the test on a fairly large scale they do not yield- the results which we may have expected"
Every remedy, 1. was assured, is thoroughly tested as soon as it becomes knows, and, to get back to trypsia, there is good reason to believe that hundreds of private practitioners In this country have also tried it, but without success....It is a mistake, I was told, to ruppose, as some persons seem to do, that remedies are not tried because they are new.. Patients are always asking for something to be done, and. medical practitioners do everything to satisfy
these demands."
F
"Now, if it should happen," I said, "that the fuller reports of Professor Morton's ex- periments confirm fully all that has been said of his achievements, will they induce you to try trypsin ngain?"
*4
*If we find it is infallible ineu wa shall put it to a further test,"
"In the meantime, may I ask, "is the general position of research work hopefull
"I think," was the reply, "we are clearing the ground, and now that" wa are working on the'disease in animals, Ithink we shall probab ly learn a good deal more about it."
Have you had any cures at all under special treatment?"
"We cannot say we have had direct eures. With certain rodent ulcers, one form of cancer we have had very fair results with radium; but we do not know any, successful treatment
beyond the knife, and that early X-rays
