We are just now in the midst of the Diwali, the most important of the Hindu festival; I lasts for four or five days and marks the close of the old and the com.rencement of the Hindu new year. It occurs twenty days after the Navaratri felval we noticed a short time back. As that festival is dedicated to Durge, the consort of Shiva, the Diwali is held sacred to Faming, Hr. s. 1,35% A. W. Oulerbridge, Lakshmi, the wife of Vin But Durga, 9th Nov, Manila 6th Nov, Grn.-R.& under the name of Bhawani, has also a shore in it. Saruwali, the consort of Brahma, Balso specially worshipped on this occasion. Thus the three consorts, Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Durgn or Bhawani,' or the three great gods of the Hindu unity, Brahma the Creator, Vulino, the Preserves and Shiva, the Destroyer, are ali concerned in this festival, which is thui held in their special honour. Lakshmi, ar 5bṛi, in the goddess of good fortune and plenty and wealth, and presides ‘over "Commerce mong other things Hence the Diwali is the mer chants' feast specially. They invoke their P tron gaddess during it and propitiate her by various ceremonias

They close their accounts

for the year on this occasion and open a new account for the ensuing year in their books This is done with great ceremony, Saruwat! the goddess who presides over books of learn: ing of all kinds, is also invoked along with Lakshmi so that the two together may bless them with plenty and prosperity during the year. As other people besides the Hindus cone in close contact in business relations with them, thase also celebrate the Diwali with greatpomp, In fact, it is the festival which is generally kept by all the rich and commercial classes in the great cities of Western India,-Hindus, Parsin and even Mahomedans, Merchants of all these classeslav aside their religious differences on this occasion, and commence their business year with the Diwali, The. Pareis and Ma homedans used in perform some of the. Hindu ceremonies of blessing the nccount-books, and Brahmans used to be employed by some of these merchants on the occasion. But of late many of them do not consider it proper to follow the Hindus in the performance of these ceremonies and merely content themselves with changing their books and taking new ones with the commercement of the business year on this occasion.

THE GODDESS OF OPULENCE.

* An interesting ceremony is performed by the Hindus durin‹ the Diwali festival. All the

ILLUMINATION IN THE NATIVE TOWN. A great feature of the Diwali, that which strikes na outsider the most, is the illumination In fact, the word Diwali means a feast of lampi 'orrather a row or line of lamps; dip, lamp, and ali, line Lakshmi, likes light and avoit dark- ness, and, therefore, even the night it turned Into day by plenty of lamps he whole native town during these nights ir ablaze with the illuminations. Not only the Hindus but Parsees and Mahomedans, too, vie with one another to render their houses and shops attractive with lamps, and much ingenuity in expended on this purpose. All the latest appliances of science are utilised, and we can ste in a couple of hours" drive through the native town during these evenings just anw an exhibition of all the various kinds of luminantı from the lickering coroanut oil butter to gas and elocujc lights in their various aspects. The Illuminations on the occasion of this festival are considered an index of the prosperity of the year. If the year kır beers bad one with damine, slack trade and the like, the Diwali illuminations reflect thin want of prosperity of the people, and are poor. But if there has been a brisk trade, a bumper app, good geveral health of the people and the like, the Diwali that year is celebrated with great eclus and the luminations are very brilliant. When the American Civil War of 1863-64 caused us antial prosperity by raising the demand for its price rose fabulously high this giddy prosperity was well reflected in the Diwali celebrations of those years which are atill remembered by those who had witnessed them as very grand. The illuminations were on an extensive scale and Bombay was turned into fairyland on the occasions. When the crash came in 186

1865 during the Share Minia, the Diwali was extremely poor and it Do con. tinued for several years of depression. paat year has been one of rather unusual prosperity, and our mills have had a very brisk time of it, besides the monsoon barkeen a fair one promisin, good harvests, Fo the Diwali
