JAPANESE SHIPBUILDING.

INDUSTRY.

Referring to the condition of the shipbuilding indoury along Kizu River, Osaka, the 'Asaki observes that the small shipbuilding yards on the river are very slack in consequence of the depression to the marine transport business of late. With the few exceptions at the large yards, no orders for the construction of any How vessels have been "received, while the repair of steamers is being delayed as much as possible by the owners, For this reason the business at the shipbuilding-yards along the river has fallen off by some 40 per cent as compared with this time last year.

The Fujinagata Shipbuildlog Yard is now building a steamer of about joc tons, a ate

| launch of about 18 toss for the Osaka Cus... Coms, and eight wooden lighters for the Kobe Pier Company, while two O.S.K. steamers, the Kiigawa and Teba, are docked there for repair.

· The Nakamura Shipbuilding Yard bas tem- porarily suspended operations,

The Ono Shipbuilding Yard is building a steamer of 380 tons for the Tora Steamship Company, and an iron steamer of Boo tons and a wooden steamer of 620 tons available for "sale, while the Tukajačimaru is being repaired

there.

"

"The Osaka Dock Company is repairing two 0.5,K, steamers under 400 tons, and building none. The Sora Shipbuilding Yard is building three wooden steamers of 500, 165 and 27 tons respectively, and repairing four steamers-the Matsuyamamaru No. 1, Unssi-maru No 3, Alot mara No. 3 and Myobo maru.

The Harada Shipbuilding Yard is building two lion ateamers of about 354 and 90 tons for sale, and a wooden steamer of 270 tons for the proprietor of the yard, and is repairing three steamers, The Mibar, Hazama, Matsul and Kishimoto yards are building a few small steamers. In all, steel or iron steamers, with an aggregate tonnage of about 2,700, and nine wood en steamers with an aggregate tonnage of about.. 2,300, are being built along the Kiza River, in- addition to a steamer of about 1,000 tons to be, named the Nagata maru No. 20, which is to be laid down at the Fuji Nagata Yaro and a steamer about go feet long to be commence d shortly at the Nakamura Shipbuilding Yard.'.

consequence of the great activity in shipbuild- ing witnessed last year, there is an ample supply of these materials, the market price for - which has advanced by 5 to 10 per cent, over the rate last year, with a still upward tendency.. Under all circumstances, the cost of building steamers is unchanged. The price of an pr dinary passenger and cargo bost, including bull and engines, is about Yapo per ton for as fron vessel and V150 for a wodden vessel under 500 tons; and from Yazo to Y260 per ton for İran vesicle, and YtBo ̄toTM¥200 for a wooden vossal under 200 tons.
