JURY RETIRE.
The jury retired to consider their decision at 5 p.m.
A large crowd of people, the largest ever seen is the Supreme Court, had gathered by this time to hear the verdict. People of all classes were to be seen and it was perhaps astonishing in a place like Shanghai to see the number of women-folk who were present. The majority of them seemed to take The whole proceedings asnély staged act in a theatre and while the jury were in retirement promenaded the spacious ground of the consulate chatting gaily ne'if a man's life, which was in the balance was anere Jarstelle and affording merely a matter of conjecture as to the jury's decision.
THE VERDICT.
Upon returning just within half an hour the furywere asked if they had agreed upon A verdict.
The foreman of the jury, Captain Grayson, replied they had and their verdict was, that accused was guilty of manslaughter under great provocation at the moment
Prisoner said he had nothing to say why sentence should not be passed upon him
His Lordship in passing sentence upon the prisoner said the jury had taken a lenient view | of his conduct. He would have to pass veņ tecce upon him which would enable the com munity to know that frearms were not to he encouraged being carried about., He would sentence him to eighteen months' hard labour.
At this there was an irrepressible outburst at the back of the Court, first commencing clapping of hands, cheers and cries of "Bravo Hyndman. This latter evidently from Portu guese friends of the prisoner His Lordship left the Court hurriedly:-Shanghat Times. »
