THE LOSS OF THE "MONTAGU."!

SOME REMARKABLE, HEBCURS,

Having regard to the abandonment of the salvage operations of the stranded battleship Montagu, the wreck of which is to be sold by auction, it is interesting to recall some of the successful operations which have been carried out in regard to salving wrecks.

When the Sultan went on the rocks off Comino, between alta and Gozo, and alip ping off, sank in deep water, she was salved successfully by a Genoa firm. To foreign en terprise also the salvage of the battleship Howa bad to be entrusted when she tank off Ferrol. The salvage work on the Montagu, which is perched precariously on a ledge of rocks on Lundy Island, was entrusted to a private firm. A few examples of successful modern sal• vage will illustrate the methods employed. better than any technical description. Tha famous case of the City of Paris, which struck the Manacles on May 21, 1899, is well within recollection, She lay in such a position that the first storm seemed likely to break her up. But the divers got to work, slowly and labour ously blasting away the rocks which bad piere ced her hall, and then built a stout frame, work over the holes. While this was balog' done, gangs of men were employed emptying sand and, stones into her stern, ta tilt her when she was raised on a high tide. These opera. tions were continued through June and well into July, and still she lay there, battered and weather-beaten. One day three lugs affixed hawsers, and were able to draw the ship rea, ward nearly 100 fest, and, with a supreme effort she was pulled off the rocks, and fosted again, The pumps were able to control the flow of water, and the was towed into Falmouth to rofil.

The Liverpool Salvage Association has par formed some remarkable feats of wreck-raising [recently. When the hull of the battleship

Belleisie had been shattered by experimentai.. Kusnery and torpedo fire, it was sunk deep into soft mud. This was drawn away by the action of powerful pumps, and a hole 15 feet by 11 feet was revealed below the water line. The association's men made an effective temporary patch over the rent, the pumps were set to work, the Belleisle was towed into deep water, and successfully docked for examination The Sarah Brough, having been in collision, sapk

The Clan Turret, a 4,000-ton abip, had sus. tained in collision very serious damage, the hole in her side baing 17 feet deep and 10 feet wide. She was beschied near Holyhead, and the association set to work upon her. The shattered plates were jagged, and projected in a very awkward way, but dynamite was used to make them 'night and smooth. Then can, vas bags filled with oakum were fastened round the edges of the plates, and upon this the ivers constructed a cofferdam of planks and secured with screw nuts. The seams were

overlaid with canvas and battens, and when tho was pumped dry and towed off the beach here was little difficulty in controlling the inflow of water as she was taken to port:

A still more remarkable case is that of the Cubenda, an Elder Dempster vessel, which went ashore on the West African coast She was filled with water, and the association's sug Blaser

went out with three loin, pumps and Hear. Temporary repairs were effected, and. the pumps kept her floating till she could by
