Shelley himself had less thas eighteen months to live when Keats died, his body, washed up on the hore near Via Reggio with that of his companion Williams, being. in July of the fallowing year. When the bodies had been consumed by fire in the pre- sence of Byron, Leight and Trelawney, the ashes of Shelley were placed in a casket, pod afterwards inerted, as already stated,

NAVAL V. PRIVATE EFFORT.

If this perilous and difficult task can be ac complished, the nation and the Navy will be grateful to the salvers. But the question still arises whether the Navy of the greatest mari. time Power should not be equipped in un dertake such work for itself. On this point there is a conflict of opinion, ta a paper which he read last year before the in stitute of Naval Architects, Captain R. H. Bacon, R.N., wh↑ has had great experience of submarine work, strongly discountenanced any such departure. The success of salvage work, be argued, usually depends on practical experience, acquired by long training and constant practice. __The_mere_plan__is_o_ secondary consideration, and in all large salvage operations special gear has to be, designed and built; such appliances cannot be kept stored. He held that the most valuable asset of salvage companies is the long experience of their divers, and the constant training which the mercantile marine affords them; and that in such commercial enterprises the Navy never could have a share.

On the other hand, there are those who can. tend that the policy which has provided floating workshope to accompany the fect for repairs should be extended, and that, it is just as esscálial 11 make provision for the salvage

WHERE KEATS DIRD.

THE PROPOSED KEATS AND SHELLEY SIRMORIAL IN ROME.

It is to be hoped that no difficulty will be found in raising the necessary money to pur chase the house in Rome in which Keats lied. and to establish therein a permanent memorial. not only of Kea's himself," but of Shelley, whose dust lies buried only a stone's throw away from his brother poet's grave, "in the capital of the vanished world as Shelley describes it in one of his glowing letters to Thomas love Peacock. The movement has been set on foot by a group of British and American literary men, with the sanction of King Edward, the King of Italy, and President Roosevelt. A fund has beer formed to receive subscriptions for the purchase price of the house, which is slightly over £4,roo, and to onable the committee to carry out the other abjects of the scheme. They include the forma ilon of a perpetual guardianship over twa com panions. Severn and Trelawney, who are buried beside them, and to establish in the house itself a memorial library of Keats and Shelley, so that future visitors to Rome will. find A place and facilities for a comprehensive study of both poets,
