Canton, 17th August. A large procession of students from different colleges in Canton paraded the streets on the 16th inst, carrying banners bearing various. devices purporting to condemn the opium habit, They were dressed in white and wore straw hats with blue ribbons on which there were

white letters, As they perambulated the streets the distributed leaflets in support of the demonstration. One of the leaflets which fell into my bands set forth that the native population of Canton pumbried over three million inhabitants and more than half of that number were addicted to the

∙opium habit. It was proposed to form an anti-opium society, building a hospital and en- kaging European-doctors, so that persons who had contracted ibe smoking babit Could be properly attended to. When the society is formed, the leafiel went on, any one desiring to get rid of the habit, cas apply personally or by letter to the secretary of the society, the hospital where proper treatment will be affuided. Among other things the society will sent, offices throu bout the city, and preachers will be engaged to preach to the people the evils of smok ing op.um. Also at such meetings opium.. stricken persons, such as pale-faced propte. cripples, etc., will be exliber on a stage showing the effects of opium. Witness: The duties of the inspectors are laid down, but I cannot speak as to those of the watchmen.
