from China, are deservedly popular sot alone among the Chinese, but with the foreigners as well, who God them of great utility for short distances during business hours. Throughout

the Empire the finzikabas are found in greater or less numbers as the traffic requires, while thousands of them are in uso in cities of large population, indicating the enormous and con- atantly increasing demand for these vehicles. The large annual transactions in jariksha may be more fully understood when it i realised that their life scarcely over extends beyond three years, and then even the best of their parts are practically useless in the con- struction of a new jinriksha. At present Japan is the only competitor of the Chinese-made vehicle, and it is now freely predicted that the Japanese jinriksha will eventually dominate this market, especially in Central and Northern Chinn. Several reasons are responsible for this belief, the most prominent of which being, perhaps, their popularity with the jinriksha coolies. The vehicles are lighter, easier to pull, and can be drawn a greater distance in a shorter time and with far less exertion than the more cumbersome Chinese jinriksha., The body of the Japanese jinriksha it covered with lacquer instead of paint, which produces a much neater and more attractive appearance, with its glass- like surface and its trim contour. These jin- rikshas'look as though they were turned out by machinery, and they probably are, for caci spoke is apparently identical with every other spoke to the wheel, and there is a general .Appearance of uniformity in the machine which indicates that the various parts are not made by band.

The Japanese jiuriksha's were established in Shanghai a public vehicles about eighteen months ago, and their introduction in various olher ports in China, is being. pushed with characteristic Japanese energy. The whole- sald price for these vehicles laid down in. Shanghai is approximately $38 Mexican, or about $ry in American money. Occasional sales are reported at retail in this part of China, a machine realising, when disposed of in this manner, about 550 Mexican. These machines are of three grades, and their retail prices here are $48, 551, and $52 Mexican. The Japanese jinrisksha manufacturers have already established agencies in Shanghai, an d are carrying on their campaign of trade nggrés- sion with an energy which already presupposes gratifying returns. These machines are con- structed entirely of wood, with the exception of the springs, axles, and the few necessary, metal. trimmings on the body, in the hood, and the iron tire. The Japanese vehicle commands a' considerably higher rental from the coolies, who pay a certain amount daily to the com - ponies or jieriksha masters opèrating them, This is due to its attractive and showy appear ance, which is naturally more inviting to the public, thus increasing the daily receipts of the **jintikka coolic,

The

In discussing a' possible invasion of the jinriksha market in China by American manu- facturers, it is necessary to consider as wel the unattractive and easily improved-upon features of the Japanese vehicle. Expressions are not infrequently heard in Central and Northern Chion that the Japanese article is built to sell because of its attractive appear. ance, lightness of construction, and other desirable qualities, but that strength and durability have no part in its make-up. In Shanghai alone there are now approximately 250 Japanese-made vehicles, and, although they have been in use but a comparatively abort time, complaints are increasing weekly of the necessity far, constant repair. lacquer work on the Japanese machines is beautiful in appearance and showy when it is first landed at its destination in China, bat experi- ence bas proved that it is not at all desirable for public use. Exposed constantly to the weather, the lacquer will flake off, and this cannot be replaced in China, for there are no lacquer workers here. There is only one way suc cessfully to repair such a caudition, and that is to place in the depression in the surface cous. ed by the chipping-off of the lacquer a cement, the basis of which is an ash formed from the burning of joss paper. Over this is then spread a thin layer of paint, but no other part of the body of the vehicle is touched, for the reason that paint in China will not adhere to lacquer.
