STEAMER ABANDONED.

FRENCH VESSEL ASHORE AT

LUKAORAI ISLANDS..

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Singapore, 9th May, 4.50 p.m. The master of the steamship Charterhouse, from Amoy, reports that, on the 5th inst., he passed a large. French steamer ashore on the rocks of Lukaorai Islands.

The vessel had apparently been abandoned.

[11 may be conjectured that the wreck sight. ed by the Charich house was that of the French steamer Cumbung, which went ashore at Pulo Canton some months agi. Efforts, it will be remembered, were made to salve the vessel, -but after a visit of inspection by Mr. Jameson and others it was decided that the cost of salvage would be too heavy to warrant the attempt being made, and she has now been left to the mercy of the waves.-ED, HRT.)

The Turco-Persian Boundary Question.

Losnon, 8th May." Sir Edward Grey, in a detailed statement about the Turkish negotiations, shows that Moukhtar Pasha, in an interview with the Khedive, demanded a boundary from 11 Rafch to Suez, and thence to Akabab.

The Khedive replied suggesting a demär cation, on the basis of the Grand Vizier's telegram of the 8th April, 1892, on a line runsing from El Rasch to, three miles west of Akabah.

t

Turkey replied that the telegram only re- lerted to the western side of the peninsula, and that its interpretation only concerned. Turkey.

A British note of the 3rd April supported the Khedive's proposal, and asked for a favourable reply within ten days.

· Sir Edward Grey added that the extent of the Turkish demands, and the tone and character of the Turkish communications to the Khedive, made it impossibile to deler a settlement indefinitely. An assent to the development of the Turkish dumands, would be read as a danger to the freedom of the Canal, the liberties of Egyps, and to the Khedival dynasty.

Lates.

The whole Press warmly supports Sir Ed- ward Grey's attitude on the question of the boundary of Sinai.
