BUTTHRILY AIRSHIP.
100 MILES AN HOUR THROUGH SPACE,
driven motor will
A new kind of airship, in principle unlike anything that has been seen hitherios, has just been invented by Mfr. Sudoey Lawrence, the well-known engineer and member of the Aaro- nautical Society
My
machine," he explained, "combines the principle of the flight of the butterfly and the bird. When you see it in the air, with its outstretched wings, it will look more like a huge vakture than a flying machine. Follow- ing the model on which, I have been working day and night for months past, the ship will be built of bamboo and
and; with the petrol long by 62 feet benaminium, about 35 feet
weigh
not me than 503 lbs. The total cost will amount to only £150.
"As success in aeris flight must depend, in my opinion, solely on a echanical pro- peller, without the aid of gas ballon, I have designed a rotary machine which is a com bination of twn propellers. It is unlike the ordinary ship's screw ng which so, many Inventors have built their hopes. It has a very powerful thrust, capable of lifting the machine direct from the ground without the aid of gas, and when in full fight I calcu- Iate it will cover space at the rate of too miles an hour Such a result in aerial navigation is about po per cent. better than anything yet accomplished."
If the notor should break down in mid air, continued the inventor, there isän arrangement by which a small but efficient, aeroplane lets the ship down gently on to the earth. In Mr. Lawrence's opinion, the wh 1ecret of aerial flight is the provision of an effective propeller with a very strong ties The questions of gas balloons, aeroplanes, and steering are quite subsidary.
Man would have conquered the air long ngo," said Mr. Lawrence, if he had only in- vented an adequate propeller fashioned on the principle of night of our le faid neronauts, Air is such a al ppery, mobile thing that the moment you touch if it moves about in all directions, and with that difficulty in view I have been experimenting on my model for months past. The mobility of the nir is one of the principal causes of failure, The propeller of the model makes 800 revolu- tions a minute, and the Birde machine, which weighs only half a pound, has the power to lift & weight twice its šize.”
The War Office has communicated with Mr. Edgar Wilson, of the trial trip of his new air- ships so that a representative' may be sent to watch the experiment Two airships are un- der construction at Wembley Park, and Mr. Wilson hopes to have the larger one completed by Whitsentide.
This machine will be propelled hy git, screwn fore and alt, and will have a hexagonal udder for steering, it is in he fitted with a 12-h.p. engine M. Wils a will make an endeavour to circle St. Paul's and the Cathofte Calledral. Westminster, and he also intends to become a competitor for a prize offered by the Tera, Club for the first practical diving machine. The smaller machine is described by Me, Wilson as "a greatly improved flapping winged ap paratus fashioned on the lines of the engle."
