FASHION IN CHRISTIAN NAMES.
The word "shioa" in this connection is significant of the complete change which has come over nien's minds with re card to the sub- ject of names and their importance since the time when to demand a stranger's was to ask him to put himself absolutely at one's mercy. For many English people the locus classicus Is that chapter in Exodus in which is the story
of Jacob's fight "unt the breaking of the day"
with the unknown mysterious stranger whose Dame ho required an the price of freedom from his fierce embrace; but, of course, similar instances of the power attached to the know. ledge of a person's name are to be found in most early literatures. It may also, poihaps, be worth while to recall as a possible instance of the survival of this old-world belief that even to-day the first question which schoolboys ask of the new comer is, "What's your name? So, too, in Thackery's ballad of "Eliza Davis" the same question leafs directly to the disas tere trenunted by l'oliceman X. Yet though the observer may find, or think. He has found, some traces of the pan wence of this belief, it is none the less true that for many centuries fashion has had something to say in the naming of children. Originally, of course, the name expressed the objeci so distincely ns in mark it off from others of clans. "Fufus" was the man with red hair; "trabo" had a cast in his eyes" Clemens" was mild-mannered, but by no means wenk in character, But as time went on, these perso almamies became less accurately filed to the individuals who possess ed then; so that a man was given his father's name to show to what family he belonged, while his own name was chosen for various reasons, with the result that all individuality of nomenclature was lost.
In England the influence of fashion apon pomenclature has been as c'early marked as in other countries. Peligion at various times has dose much to popularse particblar varieties, The Cru-ades, for instance, brought into favour many saints and Bible armes and Henry111, in his love for England and the English, called his successor dward, after the Confessor, who held so high a place in the affections of his subjects, thereby beginning that long series of Royal E wards which after so long an interval

With the New Learning came the taste for classical names, and many were the un-English'f was (some of which are still in use) given by parents to their children. At the same time a contrary tendency was observable. The growth of rell gious feeling throughout the nation was re- fected in the us among the more pious familles of names such as Faith Hope, Charity, Prudence, Patience, and Mercy. During the sixteenth century began the practica of employ. Ing Bible names, often chosen at haphazard, with results which hardly tended to edification when unbelievers had their mocking attention drawn to them. The more reasonable of these survived ridicule, but even Puritan severity. could not make the 'cntinued use of such as Bind-their-kir gs-with-chains-and- names their-nobles-with-fet ers of iron” b. any means
