A EUROPEAN LADY ATTACKED.
We regret to have to note the first case of plague recorded this year amongst the Euro. pean community. The patient is a lady resid ing at No. 1, Beaconsfield Arcade. This is a most unusual thing for any one 10 do and the writer may have to pay dear for his tenerly. But it shows the trend of the times The people are breaking from the past and grasping after power. The future is full of uncertainties,
THE LIEN-CHAU MASSACRE. Notwithstanding the many promises given to the American Commissioners when they were at Lien-chau that the search for the lenders in the massacre would be continued vigorously up to date nothing more has been done. The people have returned to their villages, and no new arrests have been made. It looks as if the whole matter has been drop ped. The punishment has been in no sense adequate to the crime and if something more is not done soon a repetition of the terrible atrocities of last October will soon be heard of in some other part of the province.

The methods of the gentry in securing schools do not always meet with approval. Ancestral halls and temples are appropriated and in many cases this arouses bitter feeling The people attribute this appropriation of ances tral hulls and templesto the influence of foreign. ers and especially to missionaries who have to bearthe brunt ofallibe malice and ill-will arous- cd.
In some places the gentry are using the funds collected for schools for themselves. In one neighbourhood the first bill of accounts submitted the bille for opiam and chair hire used up a large part of the money collected, and the people rose in indignant protest. These things will happen. But the Chinese, are tak ing hold of the new schools in such a way that auccess is sure to follow. Many mistakes will be made. Criticism should be mild, and the teachers and committee should receive every help and encouragement.
