ON Sunday a Chinaman named Lam Mau engaged a chair to take him home. When passing Wing Shing Street, a thoroughfare which is dimly lighted, Lan was pounced upon by a mas from behind, and after receiving a fow blaws was relieved of his gold finger ring. A chase followed with the result that two coolies were arrasted. They were placed before Mr. C. A. D. Melbourne, at the Police Court on Monday, at the instance of Tospector Smith on a charge of theft. His Worship held that the ovidence was not strong enough,to convict, the men on the first charge, that of stealing the ring. They were sentenced to three weeks' hard labour each and six hours stocks for the assault.
THROUGH some "joker's "trick there was a big row in Third Street on Sunday and it resulted in one man being removed to, hospital and elgbt to the No.7 Police Station, Some person had probably been ejected from No. 34 Third Street, where gambling was being carried on, 10 in order to get his own back, ho raised a false alarm of police. Confusion reigned supreme, and the gamblets made tracks for safer quarters. One man jumped out of the window and hurt his back, while five others go up on the roof and crossed to other houses. They found a skylight in house No. 44 open, and one of the men in trying to get through noiselessly lost his balance and fell through, landing on the chest of one of the sleeping occupants of the house. The rude awakening caused a free fight in No. 44. Third Street, and the other four on the roof slipped down the sky. light and joined in. The police were called and eight men arrested, while the wounded man who fell from the window was carried to hos ital. They were bound over in the summ of $100 at the Police Court on Monday to be of good conduct for one year..
