ST. GEORGE'S DAY.
AN UNQUALIFIED, SUCCESS. BRILLIANT ASSEMBLAGE AT TUR CITY HALL,
"Ax had been anticipated, the ba'l given at the City Hall Buildings in honour of England's patron mint proved to be a huge success. Under the blaze of a myriad electric lights, the decorations appeared to the best advantage, and the vivacity which characterised the pro ceedings was worthy of the best traditions of the City Hall. Over a thousand people ac- cepted Invitations to the ball, but notwithstand- Fing the number of dancers the Halls did not appear to be unduly crowded. Three Halls had been set apart for dancing, but only two were actually uțilmed, the majority preferring to dispart themselves in the room set apart tų St. David Andis St. George's Hall, The ball opened promptly at nine o'clock, and at eleven supper was served in the theatre. The proprietors of the King Edward Hotel were responsible for the catering, and it has to be stated that not. only was an excellent menu submitted but the service of waiters was admirable. Four
Yeomen of the Guard, who had been on duty at the entrance to the City Hall in the early part of the evening, appeared on the scene
when joints were announced. To the tune of "The Roast Beef 6 England," the beefeaters hoisted an immense tray, bearing the

Towards the close of every Chinose year there is more or less unrest in the interior of

This year is also no exception to the rule, and the common people are at the mercy of these robber bands, when they know not shot a day may bring forth.. Sometimes the villagers band themselves together to guard their houses and goods, but they are in con- stant terror of a night attack. During the last jew weeks and months, the robbers have gone one step further, and have not only seized the cattle and goods of the people, but they have executed a series of brigandage that is well- seized and held in custody until a certain sum nigh appalling. CANTUN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE.
SECOND ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT OF THE PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT.
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
Gangon, Jan. 18th, 1906.
A large and intelligent audiènce of Chinese and foreignes gathered this oftertioon at the Canton Christian College to witness the second annual commencement exercises in connection with the above institution. The court in the centre of the group of temporary buildings was tastefully decorated. In the centre was a bank of flowers over which proudly floated the beautiful banner was by the college students during the late athletic contest of the Canton schools.
Five young men have completed the four years' preparatory course and to-day received certificates certifying to this fact. The young men are:-Kwan Yan Cho, Ngo Si Chow, Tong Pui Yuk, Ng Hei Lui and Ngo Wan

At the incline near the Football Club dressing room, on the road leading to Wong-nei-chong, Mr. Deacon was hund" lying "unconscious and slightly delirious. In a few places vigilance committees are appointed who take toras in' watching the entire night, bist while this may protect the village, it does not protect the business man who is often compelled to leave his home, nor the women and children who go to the mountain side to cut grass for fuel. The people are in dire straits, not having any weapons with which to prote t themselves. It is, no doubt, wise policy not 10 sell firearms to the Chinese indiscriminately, but this often prevents the honest and upright villagers fro7 protecting their property and their lives. It occasionally happens that a Chinese returning from abroad rings some firearms with him, which are con- iscated when be reaches Hongkong and a heavy fine imposed; but all these weapons are only bought for the preservation of the lives of their own relatives and friends in the country where such lawlessness exists.
