In the following we give a careful review of the Lisu chau masticṛe, s

Dr. Machle reached Lien-chau on the evening of Oct. 26th. Returning with him were Mrs. Machle and his daughter Amy, and also Rev. Mr. and Mrs, Peale who had arrived from America a few weeks previously to join, the Lien-chan Mission. The missionaries at Lien-chat when Dr. Machle and his party arrived were Dr. E. Chesnut and Miss Patterson. The property of the American Mission is situated on the west bank of the tlen-chau river opposite the City of Lien-chau. The building's conest of a woman's hospital, a men's hospital, two re-

sidences for missionaries, a church, a hall for women's meeting and a residence for a native preacher. The hospitals are surrounded by vegetable gardens on three sides, while the fourth side is a well-wooded hill on which the other buildings are built. There is a distance of about 205 yards between the hos- pitals and the other buildings. The men's and women's hospitals, are separated- by a nariow lane "about 15 feet wido. Several smnati vil- lages are in the neighbourhand of the mission property. Lien-chau city has a population of about 50,000.
