AN IMPORTANT ARREST,
At length some of the searchers returned to the city bringing with thảm à number of men who had been discovered in hiding in a com moa lodging house at a small village across the Kwangfung borders in Ilunan province some forty or fifty miles from Lien-chau. The gentry from information received" had heard of the whereabouts of a vegetable dealer against whom wis alleged there was well founded evidence that he was prominently associated with the guilty on the memorable ist day of the Joth moon. Acting upon this advice soldiers proceeded to the lodging house and there found Leung A Kay and brought him with others to the yaméit at Lien-chau,"
From what subsequently transpired it up pears that this man, who was 33 years of age, was a native of the village of Choy Un Pa, and on the day in question was engaged as a watch man at the temple where the joss celebration was being carried on. Early that, marning lie was seen in the vicinity of the hospitals with a double edged sword, and after demanding the return of the cannon, which Dr. Machle had taken, and which he knew had been handed back, was heard to use threats towards the for. signers. I ven an far back as last year he said to Dr Machle: We are going to burn the hospitals and kill the missionaries." He was then very violent and threatened Dr. Machle. On the 29th October he was seen at Lung Tam temple, and while he denied have ing actually taken part in the murder the testi mony of witnesses was quite sufficient to secure his conviction, He admitted that he was there and saw people with weapons and garden implements, and acknowledged that he hired two beggars to carry the anatomical specimens through the streets and himself aisted la carrying them out of the hospital along with a score or so of other natives. He was closely confined in the yamon and it pub. sequently transpired that the Lien-chau officials bad sentenced this man and two others to death. Leung A Kam accused a matting worker of the name of Kung A shun of going Into the river when Dr. Chesnul was thrown In and being present when Tang Kung Táo stabbed her with strident, Kung was a young yellow of z6 and belonged to the village of Shiu Ki Chung. He denied having gone to Lung Tam temple and said he was engaged
