numerous chances will be taken by unscrupulous people to smuggle large quan
ities of the coin out of the islands. The lowest point touched by silver "sinces 1900
in January 1903 when it went as low mftód.

In the endeavour to Benefit by the present bigh price of silver now prevailing, alios all the Mexican and Filipino Spanish coins which 'ufe still to be found in the islands are being rapidly gathered in. The estimated shipments of silver since the first •part of the present month is said to total nearly 145,000. This is large considering that it has been slated that the amount left is very small.
On the date of the passing of the Philippine currency act by the congress of the United States silver was
was as low as 228.
By reference to the 1st and 2nd-reports of the civil commission and to Mr. Conant's re port in 1900 it is seen that they recommer ded that the pen should be 835 fins and if com. gress had acted on this suggestion instead of making i1, 90 fine there would not now be a, chance of its ever reaching such value for a long time to come.
On the possibility of it being smuggled ont of Manila, Mr. Shuster, inso'ar collector of customs, was seen yesterday. It was stated that certain persons would rodeavour to ship out large quantities of the sliver pesos through the medium of packing in bales of hemp ar. other articles. Mr. Shuster said that the customs employees would be prepared for any attempt that might be stride in this direction and that he would see hat everything done to prevent any such attempt.
The local bankers were scets with regard 10- this rise in silver and they were asked whether this
portended any big rise in the price of silver, From what they say it
would
appear that the price of silver has been forced to its present Ligh position through the large calls for silver which have been made through the Japanese war, further through speculation and the dem and boing greater than the supply.

THE CONGREGATION OF BEASTS. There are seventeen lions among them and two huge snow white Polar bears, as well as two Siberian bears. The Polar bears have never been seen, out here before. There are two Siberian wolves in the lot-also a novelty. They belong in a race of whom all the world has heard wondrous bloodcurdling tales and there are many people who would go many miles to see one of these terrible brutes. Then there is one leopard in the menagerie and two, Ane boat-hounds. The mast 1: 22.ng fact. Williamson and maid, M. f. S. Maltman, about this singular collection is that

Some of the lions have been trained to do things which it seems impossible that a brute beast would ever learn. They fire pistola, they jump over, under, through and around men and things. They balance poles, ride rolling drums they exercise on bars and pole and lastly there is
