If it were generally understood how salutary the act of laughing is to the bodily health, says A physician in the London Chronicle, there might be more inughter than lamentation in the world, and farcical comedies prove more attractive to the invalid than physicians. The *Laugh and grow fat," is founded old adage on a sound physiological basis. It is commonly. observed that fat men laugh with considerable facility. But they d not laugh because they are fat. They are fat bacause they laugh, the of cachianation having a profound influence in promoting appetite, oxidation of the blad, digestion indeed, the entire and complex process of nutrition. Good nourishment pro. duces the contented body, the fit temple of the contented mind, which is, we know on ex- cellent authority, a perpetual feast
Act
The immediate physical results of indulgence in laughter are numerous. In the first place the act of laughing involves the exercise of a large number of muscles, including many of chest and a domen, of face, which, if they are exercised sufficiently, often become correspondingly well developed, as da also all those glands, blond vessels, nerves and other tissues in inturnate connection with them. The facid muscles, for example, of the man who laughs ahen and easily are generally developed to a degree which gives him the facial rotundity of a comiepted child. But laughter accomplishes much more than the production of this more outward appearance % of well-being. It has a highly beneficial in
fluence on those two vital organs, the heart and the lungs,
During what is called a "fit" of laughter the lungs may be almost completely emptied of their contained air. Fresh air is then drawn in to the fullest extent of their capacity, inflat. ing, perhaps, those little used per cells which contained previously only stagnant air and bacilli-for in the shallow breathing we ordinarily practice comparatively large tracts of air cells are not used. During this process the general circulation is accelerated, impure air is hurried out of the system and fresh air hurried in. With the forcible ascent and descent of the diaphragm during inspiration And expiration the liver and other abinminal orgens undergo a kind of kneading not unlike that undergone during massage, and this is of great benefi in rousing them from that torpor to which they are liable. The heart also stimulted to mora vigorous contraction during the active cachinnatory process. Persons who, so to speak, let themselves go and laugh with a will, sometimes bring almost all the principal muscles of their body into play, twisting, turn, ing and bending themselves almost double in sheet muscle exhilaration.
"Low spirits," or what is popularly termed "a fit of the black," is a mental stale often caused by a poisoning of the servous system with one of those curious toxins which the bady occasionally elaborates from the food supplied to it, and which perhapa & sloggisli hver (whose-duty it is to guard the portals of the system and prevent the entrance of hurtful matters from the slimentary canal) has allow ed to pass, unchallenged. Laughter alone has bren known to dissipate this kind of mental depression, by mechanically onsing the system, increasi g the rate oxidation of the bood, indirectly stimulating the organs by which such poisons are eliminated, and, by its beneficial action on the liver, arresting the absorption into the system of any more poisons, To do this, of course, the laughter must be hearly, and prolonged-of that kind evoked by the well-played farcical con edy.. It is a mat *ter of common knowledge that a man laughs more heartily when in company will others than he does by himself; this is because most of our emotional states are "catching" hence, in a theatro, an audience is easily seized with uncontrollable laughter,, aat may be with equally uncontrollable panic. The must vigorous laughter, then, must be souglit in company.

The spare, melancholy and miserable-look ing man is thin because he seldom or never gives way to healthy laughter. Mental worries, real or imaginary, will so prevent nutrition through the influence of mind on body as to produce wasting of the muscular system and' those other tissues which subserve it. If such a man would look on the fighter side of life and laugh a little more his appetite and digestion would improve, and he would be able to acquire that minimum amount of fù which is necessary to the well being of the body-lat being a ne cessary constitutent of the healthy brain and nervous system, The laughing habit is one, therefore, that is worth cultivating. It is a matter of every-day experience that one feels the better for a good laugh, on explosion of laughter being, in truth, a nerve-storm, com- parable in its effect to a thunderstorm in nature (on a very small scale), doing good by dissipat Ing those oppressive clouds of care which some

INTERESTING EXPERIMENT IN PARIS One of the most singular houses in Paris is a house for large families. 1 is situated in the Rue de Telegraphe, one of the poorest dis- tricts of the metropolis and has recently been opened. Now, the landlord of the ordinary apartment house debars children, just as be debars dogs and birds; the father of a family, therefore, is heavily penalised. But in this ner institution, the sine qua non of the candi. date's admission is that he has children. The more numerous' his offspring, the better his chance of success with the proprietor of the

The real object of the enterprise is philan thropy, not inoney-making; at the same time, it is conducted on a business basis. It is stipulated that the capital shall produce 3 per cent, Dompre, no less; if a superior sum be earned, then the residue will be devoted to im provements in the house itself, or in the reduc- tion of rentals. As Amay be supposed, the originators of this idea are concerned at what is called the "depopulation" of France, or, more properly, the stationary figures of the census. They have been wise enough to see that such a state of things has its root in the desire to economise, and that one of the first remedies is to provide cheap'house-room for numerous families.
A chief point in the family house is its cheapness Little self-contained flats are to be had as low as 10 and £16 a year. The kitchen and the living room are together, but tbora is suitable bedroom accommodation. In the combined kitchen and parlour, provision is made for a coal fire in winter, and a gau-love for cooking in summer. It is the first time that such an arrangement has been made in the
