It brings home to the taxpayer the fact that though the Government was doubtless wise in its determi- nation to expropriate the concern for the bene. fit of the community, nevertheless its actions since the step was taken have been marked by

The costs of this Arb tration arrangement will have to be added to whatever price the Committee may decide as being prope ly due to the shareholders, Tanjung Pagar is capitalised at less than 4 million, dollars. The Arbitration, by all appearances, is going to cost another million,
or-at the lowest es im some $750,000. This is an enormous price to pay for the privilege of having such distinguished visitors on the Board, and such duinguished Home experts to assist them. It is a price that seems liable in exceed any difference of estimated values that would have cropped up were local arbitrator engaged for the seulement. None of the gentlemen whose services have been secur ed-are lending those services for nothing. There may be a man bere, or a man their, on The Bond who might waive his proper claim to Ja vast Tec ja lavour of; let us say, a.K.C,M,G, One never knows how such matter-ore arinoged nowadays-especially on the possible eve of a general clealan. But if such an economy. creating contingency be overlooked, there is no doubt but that the fees to the arbitrators alone, will amount to a ponderaus sum. W, Simpson, and ships carrying white crews to bring friends proached and requested to go on a business trip to Singapors at, his time of life-to perspira in the tropics like an ordinary Civil Service Cadet for any fer much under £15,000 sterl ing. Then his travelling expenses, etc., have ta bo considered-we understand that Governi ment has sicured a splendid residence here for his especial ace immodation—and such ex.... pense's mount up Mr. Mathews, now head of the firm of Coode Sòn, and Mathews, we know from Budget Estimates etc, to be a well paid expert. Of course he may be coming out here to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and may have another losk Into that unhappy harbour scheme while he is on the spot; but it is not likely that he will accept any fee for his services in connection with the Tanjong Pagar Arbitration much below £5pco or £7,500, plus all expenses. Next we came to Mr. J. Cl Inglis, the General Ma ager of the Great Western Railway. He certainly would not leave his vast home interests for a three or four months' business trip to an uncongenial clime for any sum less than would be due to Mr. Matthews for a clinilir service. Indeed one might safely figure him at £10,000; and Lord Roben Cecil, K.D., with hi■ social and legal standing, and exalted family connections, could scarcely he expected to take a brief in this "Corner of Asia" with an endorsement that did not reach at least five figures în guineas

same may safely be estimated of
Sir Edward Boyle, KC., and also of Mr. Balfour Brawo, K.C. As Mr. P. W. Meek-the eminent consulting engineer, who comes out as no offset to Mr. Matthews-has no other fish to fry locally, he may also be put down at another £10,000, and finally there la Mr. Maulsdale who came out hera only the other day, and who certainly did not do 10 for nothing. These simple figures alone bring the 'total to over £70,000 ; but if we cut it down a fifth, will still have £5com, and more to hear from. The accountants have to be considered as well as the engineering experts, and the big London accountants command fees as heavy. an those of any other experts. The Govern ment has secured the services of Messra, Deloitte, Dever, Griffiths & Co., while the Dock Company bave engaged Mosers Price, Water house & Co. These are thetwo greatest firms, of chartered secantants in London, and they are entitled to large fees. Already Messrs, Smith and Parise, of Deloitte DeverGriffiths & Co, have been working here for a month, while Mr. Maltby, a partner in the same firm, is expected to arrive here with. Mrs. Maltby on this wook's mail. Mr. Spencer, of Price, Waterhouse & Co., is also now working here, and the pro- fessional services of these gentlemen cost money. The two firms, it may be assumed, are not getting much less than £10,000 01 £15,000 between them, which brings back the total to over $700,000, without allowing a penny for the steamship fares, and the hotel and maintenance expenses of the principals, and also not allowing a dollar for the army of steno- graphers, ¡ypewri3erf, üsisidnt accountants; printed reports, etc., the cost of which will have to ba figured upon. Presuming these details be compressed into another $20,000, iku total will be £90.000 ; and when one then calculatos upon the cost of local work expert and clerical-the sum chargeable to the taxpayer for the privilege of buying Tanjong Pagar on the presest plan amounts to a round million of dollars. For the extra 'million, the Colony will bave nothing to show but stamped receipts. Is it worth it? The matter is worth grave consideration.
