DR. OSLER's theory.

CHLOROFORM AT SIXTY,

Dr. Oaier, the famous American scientist, who created such a storm by his speech declaring that men uver forty are of no use to the world, really meant what he said.

He has just granted an interview, in which he repeated his statements, but took care to point out that bis remarks on the subject of chloroformning men at sixty were only a mild joke and founded on Anthony Trollope's story, "The Fixed Period." As Dr. Oslerli fifty-six, he is not likely to be serious on that point.

Exactly what he did say on the subject is follows!-

as

"I am going to be very bold and touch upon another question of remo dellcary but of in- finite importance in university life, one that has not been settled in America. I refer to A fixed period for the teacher, either of time of service or of age.

"It is a very serious matter in our young universities to have all of the profetors grow ing old at the same time. In some places only an erfdemic, a time limit or an age limit can Bave the situation.

"I have two fixed idean, well known to my friends, harmless obsessions, with which sometimes bore them, but which have a direct bearing on this important problem. The first is the comparative uselessness of men above forty years of age.

HISTORY MADE BY YOUNG MEN,

This may seem shocking, and yet, read aright, the world's history hears out the state- ment. Take the sum of human achievement in action, in science, in art, in literature-sub. tract the work of the men above (city, and, while we should miss great treasures; even priceless treasures, we would practically be where we are today.

"It is difficult to name a great and far-reach- ing conquest of the mind which has not been

tween the ages twenty-five and forty-these fifteen years of plenty.

"In the science and art of medicine there has not been an advance of the first rank which

has not been initiated by young or compara tively young men. Vesalius, Harvey, Hunter, Bichat, Laennee, Virchow, Lister, Koch-the green years were yet upon their heads when their epoch-making sundies were made.

"To modify an old saying, a man is sane morally at thirty, rich mentally at forty, wise spiritually at fifty-or never,

"My second fixed idea is the uselessness of men above sixty years old, and the incalcul. able benefit it would be in commercial, politi- cal, and in professional life if, as a matter of course, men stopped work at this age.

"In Rome men of sixly were not admitted to the suffrage In that charming novel, The Fixed Period. Anthony Trollope dis cusses the practical advantages in madera life of a return to this pacient age, and the plot hinges upon the admirable scheme of a college inin which at sixty men retired for a year of contemplation i efore a peaceful depar. ture by chloroform. That incalculable benefites might follow such a scheme is apparent to any one who, like myself, is nearing the limit, and who has made a careful study of the calamities which may hefall men during the seventh and .eighth decades.

"As it can be maintined that all the great advances have come from men ander forty, so the history of the world shows that a very large proportion of the evils may be inced to the sexagenarians-nearly all the great mistakes politically and socially, all of the great worst poems, most of the bud pictures, a majority of the bad novels, not a few of the bid sermonk

and speeches.

The teacher's life should have three periods. study until twenty-five, investigation until forty, profession until sixty, at which age I would have hum retired on a double allowance. Whether Anthony Trollope's suggezien of a college and chloroform should be carried out or not I have become a little dubious, as my owo time is getting so short,

"I may say for the benefit of the public that with a woman I would advise an entirely different plan, since after sixty her influence on her sex may be most helpful, particularly if added by those charming accesories, a cup and fichu."

PAGANISM IN BRITTANY,

One of the most curious relics of paganism which is still worshipped in a Chritian country, is the gigantic black stone figure of a woman, which is to be found in a forest of the district of Morbihan, in Brittany. It is known as the "Black Venus," but probably dates far back to the time when the Greeks and Romans wor. shipped that goddess. Antiquarians assert that this ugly ifol belongs to the age of the serpent. worshippers, one of the whole subterranean tem. ples is in the neighbourhood. This would make the figure much older than the Christian era. The statue is that of a huge, uncouth woman, with a sullen, angry countenance, her form zuveloped in a loose mantle. The superstitious Bretons have always worshipped the cure, asserting that it has power over the weather and the crops. If the idol is neglected they declare that the grain dies in the ear, and if the anger of the Black Woman is farther aroused a tidal wave sweeps aver Morbihan. Twice the stone was cast into the sea by plous folk, who hoped thereby to put an end to this idolatry, and twice the peasants dragged it back and set up an altar before it About two centuries ago (says the Penny Magazine), Count Pierre Lannien, on whole estate the Egure stood, in order to save the tue from both friends and enemies, dragged it by forty yake of oxed to his own château and set it up in the courtyard. He cut. an inscription on the base of the pedestal, declaring the figure to be a Venus carved by Caesar's soldier. The count and his chateau are both gone, but the buge Black Woman, overgrown, with moss, still stands in the forest, and the peasants still be- secch her to bless their crops. It needs but a short time to bring an error into the world, but Byes are sometimes jasuficient to banish lt.
