The marine superintendent of the E. and A. Mail line (Captain S. Green) is one of the must popular officials in Sydney's shipping world. The oilier day he celebrated his 37al year in the company's employ, the occasion being marked by an impromptu gathering on the part of the 'captain's friends. He joined the company as Rechnd officer in 1874, and since then, has Freached the top of the ladder. Apart from the popularity which Captain Green enjoys amongst mercantile and shipping people, he has also been a successful alderman in the North Sydney Council, and it is not very long since, owing to the heavy duties of his office, that he resigned from the council.

In the ring he had an easy heavy during the current six months, most of

trained animal.
As for the tiger, although the audience was not inclined to become quite so familiar with the wild cat, it speedily got on good terms with the beast and shouted encouragement as it leapt from pillar to post. Herr Zipf, who is in charge of the animal section, may be highly complimented on the result of his training of the lion and tiger. But the best evidence of his skill was found in the performance of Lizz e, the Elephant. The intelligent brute performed most of the tricks which circus-goers have come to associate with elephants-and^a great deal more. In company with a pony, the elephant played all manner of games and kept the audience happy.
to horsemanship, Fungerald's Circus is not inferior to any show that has been in the East. A hurricane hurdle act by Boy Lycurgus is a very clever performance; the Black Olympians give an artistic display of their fearless. ness on horseback; while Will Henderson, who is described as "the resilient jockey" proved to be the best of the bunch. It is true that he failed repeatedly to accomplish a run. deal of latitude may be granted on a first night's entertainment after a sea voyage,

Turning to the balance sheet, 1 may explain, with reference to the item "Shares in public companies", that during the half-year certain were taken up and although it was deemned prudent when closing, the accounts, to adjust values by the transfer of $13,068 from the investment fluctuation account, that amount, I am pleased to say, has since been more than recovered by the recent rise in market rates. The properties mortgaged to the company have just been revalted by Messrs. Palmer and Turner, and the valuations all show very satisfactory margins upon the sums advanced. I do not think there is anything more which calls for explanation, so, unless there are any questions to be answered, I will propose the adoption of the report and accounts as presented.

Regarding the steamer Carcille, the Japan Afail of the 1st August says:-There is some curiosity about this steamer. It is recalled that Baron Kriegelstein, by whom she was charter- ed, had acted as correspondent with both the Japanere and the Russian armies. He fell in to Japanese hands after or during the battle of
Mukden, and was of course retensed as a non-
combatant. Japanese journals are now asking
what function the Cacilie can have been dis-
charging when she steamed along the coast of Japan and entered Russian ports. Her ready access to the latter suggests that she possessed a Russian permit of some kind bur it is noted that Paron of Kriegelstein took fare to carry ail the ship's papers and his own documents to Petropavlvosk when she ran aground and to -avoid-Japanese-scrutiny-as-far-us-possible. Correspondents who sail under two flags do not inspire much confidence, and it must be confessed that the doings of Baron Kriegelstein And the Curifie invite explanation, especially as he was a reserve officer in the German
service.
