Chicago, May 15. | The veil of mystery which more than half a century hid the identity of the "Veiled Murderest," who died in prison at Mattewan, N. Y., yesterday, has been lifted by the hand of Mr. Charlotte P. Norris, 1,426 Newport- Avenue, Chicago. The so-called: "Veiled Murderess was a classmate of Mrs. Norris at the famous Ella Willard School at Troy, N. Y., sixty years ago,

The maiden name of the woman, who was aw puzzle to the authorities ever since her arrest for murder in 1853, was Charlotte Ward. She married an Englishman of rank, Sir Walter F. Elliot, but she ran away from his home is England two years after the mar riago. She came back to America to find the house of her father, a wealthy Canadian mer- chant, shut against her.

Mrs. Norris, while under no obligation so lo do, has kept the knowledge of the identity of the "Veiled Murderess" a secret through all the years since her arrest and conviction on the charge of killing Timothy Lanigan and Catherine Luber in Troy, NY Aky two years Ago, The Chicago woman west 10 Sing Prison more than thirty years ago to see Lady William, than a prisoner at that in stitution. CUNARDERS WITH GONS,

THE NEW LINER-CRUISERS.

-

Considerable progress has already been made with the work of constructing the Cunard 25. knot steamers, although, of course, they will not be ready for over twelve months yet. Odo of the steamers is being built by Messrs. wan Hunter, Wigham, Richardson and Co., of New- castle, and the other by Mars. John Brown

and Co. of Clydebank. The double bultoms of

the two great liners have been laid down, and *ome of the frame-work and even plates, laid a position. Bome new details of these vesselp have just become known. It seems that origi- ally it was the intention of the builders to make each vessel with three funnels, but owing to the requirements of the Admiralty regarding the engine and boller space, it has been found necessary for each to have four funnels. In accordance with the Admiralty demands, and the fact that the vessels are to serve as armed cruisers, each ship is to carry on the main deck several 4.7 in. guns. They will be 800 feet in length and will have a gross tonnage of about four propellers, each fitted with screws; they 30,000 fans. The turbine engines are to drive

The steame's are to be fitted with long distance wireless telegraphy appliances, and will have a speed of twenty five knots an hour, For purposes of compari son it is interesting to note the dimension of the first Cunarder, the Britannia."- This vessel was 207 feet in length, and had a gross tonnage of 1,154 10ns with an indicated |barse power of 710."
