President Roosevelt quains high rank in after-dinner speaking as now` practised. At a dinner of the tallard Society in New York he mixed a story with thanks for his reception.

One of the Senators went to the White House and said he wanted a friend of his appointed postmaster of Topka. The President's private secretary said, I am very sorry indeed, sir, bat the President wants to appoint a personal, friend. There upon the Senator anid, 'ell, ter: God's sake, If he has ene friend in Kansas, fet him appoint bim. (Grest laughter)" There have been periods during which the dissembled enlogles of the able Press and my relations with about every politician of every party and every faction, have made me feel I would like to koow whether had one friend in New York, and here I feel I have many.
Most Americans aspire to shine ar speakers; they fest as did ex-Senator Edward Oliver Walcott, of Colorado, when he was asked to speak at
New England Society, banquet in New York" It was with great diffidence (said Mr. Walcott on the night of the dinner) that I accepted the invitation of your president to respond to a toast to-night. I realised my incapacity to do juice to the occasion, while
