Yet it may be re- garded as rather fortunate for the coualry that the Admiral was in England at the time of the Satsuma rebellion, for if he had been in "Japan he might have been reduced to join the rebellion and have shared the fate of his teacher and brothers.
After his return to Japan Togo beld commis- sions on different war-zhips, but it was not wat!! the outbreak of hostilities between Japan and China in 1894 that his name was prominently brought before the public.
The circumstances attending the sinking of the British Beamer Kowsking by the Nasiwa, of which Togo was commander, will be sijil fresh in the memory of many, but a bief rece. pitulation may not be uninteresting. Towards sethe end of july the relations between Japan |
and China had been strained to such a point that a spark was sufficient to set the whole house ablaze. The First Flying Squadron, consisting of the Naniwa, Yoskino, Takachiho, and Akitsushima, under the command of Ad- miral Trudot, was charged with the duty of keeping watch over Korean waters. On the morning of July 25th the Japanera alghted - two Chinese men-of-war, the 7siyın and the 4 Kwong-ys, in the vicinity of, Fengtao. Spon the contending squadrons ́wers involved in a hol engagement in which the Chinese were de- feated. Shortly afterwards, the British steamer Kowsking, escorted by the gun-boat Seko, kove in sight. She had on board's,100 Chinese offi- cere and men and 14 guns and a German mili. tary officer named von Hanneken. In private life Admiral Togo is a quiet and unassuming gentleman, His wife is a daughter of Viscount Kaieda, a Privy Councillor, The Admiral has two sons and a` daughter, the eldest of the former being 21 years of age. If he has any particular hobby It is abooting and Ashing. The Admiral's residence at Kami Makubancho, Tokyo, is as unpretentious as its master in ostentatious.
