‘ADMIRAL TOGO,
A SKETCH OF HIS CAREER
The name of Admiral Togo Heihachiro will rank in history with that of Nelson; and the following sketch of bis life, compiled from Japanese sources, will be read with much interest at the present time.
Admiral Togo was born on December 22nd, 1847, at his father's residence at Kagoshima, which has produced many men of naval and military renown. His father was a retainer of Prince Shimadzu, Lord of Satsuma, and the Admiral is his fourth sun. The family is said to be descended from Taira-no-Shigemori, who is regarded as having been a model of filial platy to his father Kiyomo:i, who ruled Japan for twenty-five years during the rath century, The three elder brothers of Admiral Togo took part as rebels in the Satsuma rising of 1877, and two of them were killed in battle, while the third died shortly after the rebellion had been suppressed. The Admiral therefore has no brother or sister living. His father, who was a magistrate of his clan for thirteen years, died at the age of about 5o. His mother is described as a model wife well fitted to be the wother of mamural. Not only did she possess all womanly virtues, but she was very strict and careful in the upbringing of her sons; and the early training under his wise and coura geous mother has no doubt largely contributed towards the making of the man whose fame has now reached the remotest corners of the earth. Admiral Togo's mother died some years ago at the age of over go years,
Tokyo, on December 25 b, 1875). A desperate fight ensued in which many wore killed and wounded on both sides. About sixty Salsome men took refuge on board the warship Rockies maru, belongly to Prince Shimadzu, which, happened to be at anchor at Shinagawa. The 1* ship, in order to escape the enemy's parsult, immediately weighed anchor, and had started on her journey when she was confronted hy the Tokugawa ship Katten mare which was larger and more strongly armed than the Kocho, The Kalten was commanded: by Enomoto Kamajiro (now Viscount), who was afterwards appointed Minister of the Navy, In*: an engagement in Tokyo Bay that ensued the. "Kocho" was badly worsted, her hull being, ilterally riddled with shot. She, however, managed to reach Shimoda, where temporary? repairs were effected, and she finally arrived at Kobasafter much difficulty and delay. Among the officers of the Satsuma atsainer Kocho was to Sukeyashi (now Admiral), who was Commander of the Japanese Squadron during the Tapan-China War
These events, and the endeavour to gain con trol of the Emperor, led to open hostilities between the Tokugawa Shogun and the com- bined clans of Satsuma, Choshy, Tona, and Higo, resulting in the battles of Toba and Fushimi (near Kyoto)... At this time young Togo, who happened to be in Kyoto, received. an order with other men at once to proceed to Hyogo and embark in the Satsuma war
ship "Kosuga." The latter, after taking in a complement of officers and men, went out in search of the enemy, when she met the Kaiyo, commanded by Enomoto, in the Inland Sea. The fight between the two ships resulted in the withdrawal of the Katys from scilon. It is said that Togo, a young officer of ', open then distinguished himself as a brave and efficient seaman on this ocension.
A rifle fire, however, was poured into the "Kaitan," the commander of which, Koga Gengo, was killed on the bridge. Finally the Kaftan retired after this sanguinarygepisode and returned to Hakodate."
Although the Shogun, Keiki decided to restore his office, together with the Yedo castle, to the Emperor after the batile of Fushimi, some of his retainers were determin». ed upon fighting for their chief to the end. Out of the fifteen warships possessed by the- Shogun only four were surrendered to the Imperialists, while the remainder were seized by the Tokugawa reiniders. "On' bourd of there ships Enomoto, Matsudairs, and other Tokugawa men fied to Hakodate, where they established their headquarters: In March 1869 an expedition, consisting of 6,500 troope and five warships, started from Shinagawa at Tokyo for the suppression of the Hakodate rebels. Among the vessels was the Kosuga, on which was Tago. Admiral Enomoto, who commanded the Tokugawa ships, intending tu attack the Imperialists on their way, left Hakodate with his flagship "Kailen and others, A storm sprang up, and the "Kalten?, was separated from the two other ships, so The Satsume men are generally credited with that she alone approached Kuwagosuki, where the enemy's vessels were anchored.
