According to the Portland, Ore., Telegram, Mr. James J. Hill has asked Mr. E. H. Harri- man to transport 3,000 tons of steel plates to Hongkong. The plates were shipped from Eastern mills to Puget Sound, and were to have been sent from the Northern Pacific ter- minal on Hili- steamers to the Orient. The reason for the Northern Pacific's action in desiring the steel re-shipped from Portland to the Orient, is not clear to shipping meo, but it is believed that the war situation has influenced the action of the Northern Pacific. It cannot be learned what action the Harriman interests will take in the matter.
