THE N. C. D. News says that Mr. Bennet Dur HONGKONGR leigh, the famous correspondent of the Daily Tigraph, has bought the steamer: Samson from the Shanghai Tug and Lighter Co., Ld. The price is said to have been Tis. 100,000. The Samion was built in Shanghal by Messrs. Boyd & Co., Ld., in 1892, and is of 233 tons gross register and 65 K. H. P.

A Straits Ficha télegrum of 14th inst, annoucas that Mr. Tan Jiak Kim has issued a circular letter requesting contributions from non Europeans for the Straits Medicil College.. The sum of $71.000 is required. The Govern ment agrees to pay $13,200 annually for salaries and upkeep if Mr. Tan Jink Kim raises $71,000 for the establishment of the College.

THE new silver mint was established by the Board of Revenue, at Tientsin some time ago, and the building for the Bureau of the mint will be finished at the beginning of the next month and the mint itself is waiting for machin. ery. However, the machinery has been con. ficated by the Russians as it was carried by, a ileamer from America which had been captur ed by the Russian Vladivostock Squadron and the Walwupu has already approached the Rus- sian Minister at Peking to get the machinery back from Vladivostock, but there is no news and that port will soon be frozen and the machinery will not be available this year. THE German steamer Dagmar, which left Bangkok for Hongkong on Sunday morning, the Bangkok Timer of 13th inst, says, collided with the Harbour Master's steamer Phra Yam later on the same day, doing considerable damage. The Phra Yom is a new bont. launched laer year, and was lying at anchor in Koh-i-Chang harbour, when the Dagmar entered. By some miscalculation the Dagmar ran into the Phra Yom striking her abreast of the engine room. The damage is estimated at about 2,000 ticals, but was not of so norions a nature as to prevent the Phra Yom making Bangkok in enfety, Sba is now under repair at the Bangkok Dočk.

Messrs. Blackhead and Co. are building for their own use under the superintendence of Mr. James E. C. Banch, who has lately arrived from the motor works of Deimler, Berlin, for the purpose, a motor boat, on the lines of the motor-boat Phyllis, built some little time ago for work in the harbour. The new boat is to be on a largerscale, but all the interior arrange- ments will be the same as those of the Phyllis, which has so far given every satisfaction. Mr. Banch, who has had considerable experience in motor engine worke, intends to devote the whole of his attention to the building of these boats, to be placed on the market, he remaining him. self in the Colony so as to personally superin fond their building and any necessary repaira

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the maat, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.
