Scaremongers will be disappointed at the result of the labors of the Committee on Physi, cal Deterioration. To put it in a nutshell, the combissioners say "it may be as well to state a once that the impressions gathered from the great majority of the witnesses examined do not support the belief that there is any general progressive physical degeneration" in the British race.
Of course, everybody knows that this inquiry was instituted la consequence of the rejection on being prassed by the committee, both the of so many "wastrels by army doctors. Well, Director-General and the late Inspector-Gene ral of Recruiting "were fain to admit that the real lesson of the recruiting figures was the failure of the army, under present conditions, to attract a good type of recruit. Indeed, the committee says, "Gen. Berrett gives up the case for widespread deterioration when he says it is a pity that the physique of the recruit-giv- ing class is as poor as it is, sofas to cause such a large percentage of rejections."
