LOKENZO MARSHALL, manager of the Criterion Hotel in Pottinger Street, was before Mr. J. H. Kemp this morning charged by his wife and son-in-law with assault in the hotel last night, and further charged by Mrs. Marshall with being drunk and disorderly on the premises, Mrs. Marshall is the proprietress of the hotel. Evidence of the arrest was formally given, and the case was remanded for one week, bail ap- plied for by the defendant, being allowed in the sum of $1,0. This sum defendant was unable to furnish, and the complainant refusing to assist, the defendant was remanded to gaol.

RAND LABOURERS.
A telegrain from East Raud (Johannesburg) dated 22nd ult. states:-The first batch of 300 Chinese labourers has arrived from Dut ban. The coulies did not enter jobannesburg, but proceeded direct to the compounds of the New Comet mine on the East Rand.
About a hundred spectators and six mounted policemen witnessed the arrival. The coolies were quietly received, and no demonstration of any kind occurred. The journey from Durban was uneventful, the Chinese being orderly and well conducied. They marched to the com. pound. The coolie on arrival were shown their sleeping rooms around the compounds, which measure, roughly, 30 by 15 ft., and con. taiu an average number of zo men, who sleep in wooden bunks arranged in two tiers. The rooms will be heated by stoves. The food con- sists of hot meat, cabbage, and rice. The compound manager speaks Chinese, and came

THE Marine Court in Melbourne has given its decision respecting the wreck of the R.M.S. Australia. The captain and officers were absolved from all blame, - It was found that the wreck was due to the wrongful act of Pilet Dennis, in porting the vessel's helm. A BERLIN correspondent of a financial paper states that the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank, which, as already reported, is about to increase its capital, is trying to obtain the privilege of issuing bank notes in Asia. Negotiations have been carried on with the German Government
