THE LIUCHOW FIGHT.
The taking of the city of Liuchow by the brigade of mutinous troops a few weeks ago, as already recorded was, as now reported in a Wuchow, Kwangsi despatch, followed by the discriminate massacre by these soldiers, assisted by local desperadoes, of most of the city officials and a number of the gentry of the city, a few of the wealthiest of whom, however, had their lives spared in order that a ransoni might be demanded from their unlucky families. After plundering and slaying for forty-eight hours, the mutineers decided to abandon Lie- chow for the bills by invitation of the insurgents holding those fasinesses. An idea may be formed of the amount of loot taken by inese savages on their departure from Liuchow, says the N. C. D. News, when it is stated that they compelled no less than 4,500 of the inhabitants to carry their plunder for them. Among other barbanties the mutineers are said to have taken more than 800 oníartunate women and girls with them to the bills.
The P. & Times says that Marshal Su is to be sent back to Kwangs to redeem his character by another attempt to suppress the rebellion.

Notwithstanding that, as I would admit, there is still room for improvement, yet I think we have good reason to be satisfied with the result of our work, hear ing as we do from this report that the discipline and organisation are excellent and the school thoroughly efficient. Mr. Irving in his report says: "There has been a most praiseworthy attempt by the staff of this school to remodel the teaching in accordance with modern ideas, This attempt has been most successful in the lower standards. It will be seen below that the higher standards are not equally 'satisfactory but they can only be expected to improve gra. dually until they are filled by scholars who have had a better grounding according to the new method adopted.
