The writer quoted absolves his successor, Nicholas I., from the charge of cowardice - "He was absolutely ignorant of fear, and could face a band of insurgents with the calm self. possession of a shepherd surveying his bleating sheep." This statement refers to the fact that at the moment of his accession he was called upon to face a formidable military revolt in St. Petersburg in favour of the abdicated heir, Constantine. In the great war with Turkey, Alexander III., though he had no taste for, indeed, loathed the very idea of war, proved himself a cool and brave soldier, and performed his duties man- fully. His experiences in Bulgaria are believed to have shattered his'nerves, and in his beha- viour during the closing years of his reign that originated the charge of cowardliness, which

His profound seclusion at Gatchino, where for a considerable period he hid himself even from the bulk of his own officers, created a most unfavourable impression. His aversion to ride on horseback, and bis

Any man who saw as he did his own father mutilated and bleeding to death; who himself more than once narrowly escaped a similar fate; whose BATTERIES, train and carriage were blown to shreds; whose wife stood trembling in the desolate steppe among fragments and corpses; and whose bright little daughter threw her hand round his neck, and exclaimed with coba Ob! Papa, now they will come and murdar ua all'—a man who has had such experiences as these may
surely be acquitted of cowardice, even if his nerves be no longer iron."
To sum up, there is not the slightest grounds for the sweeping reflection upon the personal courage of the Romanoffa. Like the Hohen- zollerns they are a fighting race, and on the score of heredity it may be confidently antici pated that, if the occasion arises, Nicholas II, will not disgrace his ancestors on the battle- Beld. On the other hand, there can be no blinking the fact that in the hour of national trial the Romanoffs have invariably developed the melancholy temperament. This hereditary tairt, when saddled to an indifferent physique, such as the present Tsar is known to suffer from, and accompanied by the tremendous pressure of unremitting toil, which is demanded of an Emperor of Russia whilst Holy Russia is engaged in war, makes one less sanguine concerning his ability to withstand the strain of long succession of reverses to the Russian
regard to the conduct of the Tsar on that tar- rible day. On returning from the Place of the -Senate, he encountered a detachment of insar- gents. "Good day, my children," he cried. "Hurrah! Constantine," replied the soldiers. "You have mistaken your road," said Nicholas, coldly, pointing in another direction," that is the way to join the traitors. Later in the day, the Emperor openly defied the mutineers in front of his palace, till finally, no peaceable efforts being availing, he ordered the regiments which were faithful to him to fire?
Equally courageous was the conduct of his brother, the Grand Duke Michael, who exposed himself repeatedly to insurgents fire, and to whose resolution in seizing a lighted match, and applying it to a cannon loaded with grape, the favourable result was entirely owing. Daring the awful cholera epidemic of 1831, when panic stricken mobs took possession of the capital, and, in their crazy, superstitious ignorance AJS. slaughtered the physicians, it was the Emperor alone who restored order, by calling upon them
