THE following is the return of visitors to the City Hall Library and Museum for the week ending reth July, 1904-

"A A traveller from Dalny says that a great number of Japanese troops marched for Pott Arthur on Thursday.

A refugee from Yon Arthur, who left the harbour at 8 p.m. yesterday, says that only four large war vessels, nine destroyers and over twenty torpedo-boats were lying in the har- bour. The same informant slates that in the Daval fighting outside the entrance of Port Arthur, which took place on Wednesday, a large war vessel of two funnels and two masts (Poltava type) and a torpedo bost were des- troyed. It was rumoured that Russian soldiers at Fort Arthur are, from fear of the Japanese troops, conspiring to kill officers and fly away. A coachman' engaged in car transport at Golden Hill says that 300 sailors are guarding the fort at Liaotishan while 350 are stationed at Golden Hill with ten guns,

Provisions at Port Arthur are sufficient, but

fodder it scarce.

Another informant says that the artillery of the 11th Division proceeded to Tungshuk'on from Hsinatsek'on, between the 26th and the 27th Jure, and occupied Pingtoushan (500 feet high) and Pachi mountain (1,500 feet), seven miles and a half off the furt at the eastern en- trance of Port Arthur and 10 miles off the city. As the result of this the Japanese infantry accupied Siaopington island. The artillery, at first, made trial shots in order to calculate the range, and fortunately destroyed mines laid by Russians, The Russian feet, at that time, bombarded the artillery's flank and killed forty; the number of wounded is unknown. The Japanese captured seventy Russians.

Another informant says that the Japanese troops marched in the direction of the eastern coast from Dalay and occupied, after fighting from the 26th to 8th June, the surrounding heights about ten miles off Port Arthur. He saw the Japanese fleet burrying for Fort Arthur on Friday night.

Russians who left Port Arthur on Friday say that as the result of fights on the 26th and 27th eh., as many as 2,000 wounded have been sent into the town, on rickslas and any other avail- able conveyances, to be treated in the hospital. They add that the Russian fleet was at sea, when they left, and they saw the Japanese fleet! making towards Port Arthur.

A traveller from Newchwang states that on the zych ult, four Russian destroyers were engaged by Japanese, and three sank. The fourth escaped into Newchwang and was lying in the harbour there.-Universal Gaweite.

THE CURRENCY PROBLEM.

At the meeting of the committee of the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce, held on the 20th ult, the following letters were ordered for publication:-

:

Hougkong General Chamber of Commerce,

Hongkong, 28th May, 1104. SIR,-I have the honour to refer you to the correspondence which passed last year between your Chamber and the Hongkong Chamber in relation to the presentation of a petition to the Diplomatic Corps at Peking, requesting that Body to urge on the Chinese Government the imperative necessity of taking steps to estab is a uoiform National Coinage throughout China, as a first step towards the institution of currency arrangements of a less fluctuating character than those at present in use

The importance of not allowing this matter to pass into oblivion was referred to by the members of this Chamber at their recent Annual Meeting, and my Committee are anxious to know whether your Chamber is willing to make further joint representations to the Diplomatic-Body at Peking, with the object of urging it to a course of action of a more determined nature than a mere expression of sympathy as was the case last year.
