Although Marshal Yamagata did not-appeal to the mult tude in Moscow, he made a deep impression on the military men with whom he was brought in contact, and excited among them unbounded admiration by his simple kindly ways as well as by his profound know- ledge of things military. A thorough soldier, and of the very first order, was the judgment they passed on him. A second Malike, was added more often than not. They found comfort in the thought, however, that he would assuredly be safely in his grave long before there could he any question of war. THE CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

FALSE TRADE DESCRIPTION.

At the Criminal Sessions to-day the case in which Chung Man was charged with causing a false description to be applied to certain goods, to wit, opium dross, and with being in possession of goods on which a false descrip- tion was applied was resumed.

The accused gave evidence on his own he- half. He was a dross opium divan keeper, and had two divans-the Man Kee and the Cheung Kee. He had carried on the business. for thirty years, and had never had a charge made against him. All the opium he used he obtained from the Opium Farmer, and as it

was received it was entered into a book. The

Excise Officer called to check the book and chopped it if it was correct. On May 19 the

Excise Officer called and on May 20 witness was arrested. If he bought 100 from the Farmer be entered it in the book and if he sold a portion and the remainder corresponded to the balance, the book would be chopped by the Excise Officer. Lam Tung Sing was a substitute employed by him in place of an- other foki. He had only been in his employ

for one or two months.

Accused was found not guilty on the first count, and guilty on the second count. His Lordship sentenced him to one week's impri- sonment and imposed a fine of $250.
