Yesterday foo to-600 ammunition cards containing 5,000 to 7,001 rounds for small armis, passed through towards Russian-town. They came from Kaichow, and both men and animals looked fatigue. About 500 infantry made a ahorlar cut towards the same place, the carts coming through heren account of roads being better. These soldie a are distinctly European and are all of middle age. we surmised that they, under cover of a fog had retired to the north; we accordingly changed our course to that direction. We were met, however, by heavy rains which obscured the view and all hope of sighting the enemy's fleet vanished. Therefore Wo took a course in the direction in which we supposed the enemy would most likely retire. On the 16th, at dawn, we arrived at a pre-arranged spot. The weather was now clear and the sight was very extensive; but --
१ unfortunately we were unable to discover the eneniy. We cruised about, often changing our course searching for the enemy; but without success.

PAHANG MINES.
Mr. Dykes, the Warden of Mines, F.M.S., notes with regret that there is a spirit of pessimism rampant in Pahang concerning the present and future prospects of gold mining in Pahang which, he thinks, is not justified. Ele remarks: This spirit of pessimism makes 64,000 itself conspicuous outside Pahang and is likely to do harm. It we were to analyse the past we might find that the management of days gone by was not perhaps all that it should bave been, and that discredit has attached itself un. justly to various properties instead of to in- dividuals. if we analyse the present, we find that the cost of mining and milling is being reduced, the country is becoming more acces- sible, and the cloud of the past only requires a
