LOSS OF THE “HATSUSE.”

On the same day when the Hatsuse was ten miles South-east of Laotishan with other vessels, she was struck by the enemy's mechanical mines and sunk; just then the Russian flotilla, consisting of sixteen torpedo boat destroyers, approached but were re- pulsed by our cruisers, which saved 300 of

What the pre-ent condition of things has arisen from it is difficult to say. A prom nent merchant in Singapore said to-day: "There is no doubt that the bazaar is in a deplorable state just now, but what it is due to we cannot tell." A suvgestion was made that land speculation might be at the root of the trouble. People who nught to know assent that the land boom which has prevailed in Singapore for some time has dried up the fountain of ready money; and led to heavy mortgaging, Now that

money is scarce the mortgagees are calling in their principal and forec osing without.ron. sideration. On the other hand it is definitely and distinctly denjed that land speculation has anything whatever to do with the suff markets. One financial expert said he had been sedulously engaged in seeking to discover the cause of the present trouble, but so far it had eluded his grasp. He made the important remark, however, that the currency question 1 may have some bearing on the situation. There is no doubt that Singapore houses experience considerable delays in settling accounts with the cotports. Whether that is due to any cur- rency difficuly remains to be seen.

RUSSIAN REPORTS.

Shanghai, 14th May. The following t:legram from Major General Dessino, the Russian Military Agent in China, is tai en from the W, C. D. News.

Moukden, 12th May. General Mitschensko reports that he found two Japanese detach ents of considerable strength; one in the neighbourhood of the lower part of the Tayang-ho and the other at a distance of one day's march east of Suyang,

As to certain recent failures, one of the firms concerned was engaged in a big sugir deal The outbreak of hostilities between Russia and Japanirectly hastened the downfall of the firm. The sugar was shipped for the Farther Fast, but it could not be dealt with and it finally found a resting place in Hong-slowly. kong where it sold for a song,

The position seem to be something like this-If the shakiest concerns can weather the storms of the next few weeks they are likely to find a secure landing. The great hope is that the ruin of one or two may not bring about the ruin of others. As matters stand the very un- certainty of things and the suspicions aroused in the bazaar are bound to have an adverse effect on t ade generally.

FURTHER FAILURES FEARED,

Mention was made yesterday of the difficul. ties which several Chinese firms of standing and repu'e are experiencing at present on ac- count of the unremunerative prices at which products are quoted-at-present-Last-week- one large firm was reported to have failed, but it is now learned that the creditors, seeing that nothing more promising might be expected, have accepted a co "position of 40 per cent., so that the matter will be settled out of Court On Tuesday it was rumoured that the large firm of Tong Teck & Co., Market Street, had been heavily hit by soine sugar transactions. Private difficulties - were: also hinted at and a

meeting of chetties was held yesterday to dis cuss the position. It is now announced that an interim receiving order has bee applied for and granted. It is stated that the liabilities will amount to something like $1,000,02 The danger is that other firms may be involved, there is no doubt that during the next month or two the market will be exceedingly tight Indeed it will not astonish the quidnunes if other failures are reported in rapid succession.

west of the city. Yesterday there was a detach- ment of Russian infantry, 300 strong, escort- ing rice, flour, etc., to Chouyen, and also a de tachment of Russian cavalry, from Liaoyang, 200 strong, marching to Chouyen to repair a branch of the railway there, and now the re- pairs have been effected to beveral fi, leaving the rest of the work to be completed by 300 old Chinese labourers, day and night.

From Newchiatum to the vicinity of Hai. cheny that section of the railway is also under- going rapid repair by between 700 and 800 Chinese coolies. Work extending to ten li has been done, and in about a inooth the repairs will be completed —Fr.

RUSSIANS SEIZED PROVISIONS BY FORCE. According to a letter from Moulden, dated the roth of last moun, there was a scarcity of beef in the city of Liaoyang. Occasionally, there were cattle-dealers re urning from other places to Haicheng, and the places thereabout, and they brought their cattle to that city, where it was sold in re ail at between twenty-five cents and thitty cents per catty. Still it was inadequate to supply theeeds of the Rus sians, and the people are raising beef to an exorbitant price with the object of stopping Russian purchases. The rice of different kinds, stored up by the city merchants and people, and amounting to over 10000 shih, has been seized by the Russians by-force for subsequent use by the Russian army-Be

KUSSIAN DEMANDS According to the report of one who has arrived from Port Arthur, dready nine naval battles have been fought up to date, resulting in over 10,000 Russian officers and soldiers being killed. The merchants and people there are anticipating that Port Arthur cannot held out in the long run, and are all planning to leave. But this is strongly obj cted to by the Russians, and if any one must leave under peculiar cinstances, his return must be aranteed by a trustworthy s op, under pain ola heavy fine. At times Japanese placards are seen posted, advising the native merchants and people not to be afraid, and declaring that the coming of the Inpanese troops is for their protection, etc. When these placards were noticed by the Russians, they were surprised, and demanded angrily an explanation of them but they failed to obtain any information concerning their sources. So then there is a sort of fear among the Rus ian troops, who do care to fight.-Ex.

REPORTED OCCUPATION OF FORT ADAMS. A Takeshiki message dated the 8th Dist. states that a body of the Juanese troops has occupied Port Adams, the important sation on the Trans-Siberian Railway about forty miles above Ki chau. The occupation was made after a bruh with .co Russin, and part of the line was destroyed of troops has arrived at a position which would indicate that a second line of troops is now formed across the upper at of the Russian territory, this protecting the forces at Kinchau auf making railway communication with Pott Arthur and Dalny absolutely unpossible.

Con inuous engagements are daily taking place between advance detachments of both armies.

The loses on both sides are insignificant. The Japanese troops ore advancing from Pitsewo, and from the other places at wh ch they had landed, to Kinchou. The advance detachments showed themselves on the night of the 10th inst, on the heights near Sanshilipu.
