RICKSHAS AND THEIR PULLERS.
TO THE EDITO* or tux "Hoyakono TzLEGRAFI,” SIR, Complaints against rickshan and rick. sha pullers are growing loader and 1 more fre quent every day. The rickshas are so dirty that even the shortest ride in one of them wi'l soil the white garments, which the advance of the season is rendering imperative for ordinary use. In Japan, the home of the "jinricksha," the men are compelled by law to have clean linen or holland covers always over the seats and backs of the rickshas; and ach an order
here is certainly desirable. The utter igno ance of the geography of the city, in which they (the pullers) ply for about eighteen hours a day, on an average, displayed by these
men is more than deplorable. It is not
unreasonabl: to expect a de ver or a puller of a public vehicle to know something about the town in which he plies for hire, and not have him starting off for West Point when one's desired destination is, say, Wanchai: It is incredible that men who zie practically ont and about on the streets most of their lives should not know so much as the names of the streef's through which they so constantly pass, and strangers find the greatest difficulty in getting abou, through the crass ignorance of these men. In other places in the East every driver, or puller, of a public vehicle plying for hire for the conveyance of passengers, bas te pass an examination, n the topography of their respective towns Why should not the same conditions prevail here ?-Yours, &c.,

THE LATE MR. GORE-BOOTH.
It is with great regret that we have to record the death of one of the best known and most respected residents of Shanghai. Mr. E. H. Gore-Booth, who passed away at his residence in Bubbling Well Bood at ten minutes to twelve to day (5th inst.)-just as the first Saddling Bell was ringing in, the paddock opposite. We need not say that Mr. Gore-Booth was up to a couple of years ago (when failing health caused him to give it up) one of the best clerks of the course and starters that Shanghai has ever known and one of the keenest and straightest gentleman riders that ever sat in the pig kin in the Far East. The deceased had been in Shanghai and Hangkeng since 1866 in which year he came out from home to join his brother, Mr. R. H. Gore-Bouth, as a broker. He afterwards enterede firm of Adamson Bell & Co which he subsequently left to take up brokering again Few men made more friends" or did as much to retain them as Mr. Gare Booth whose death will be widely. regretted, and much sympathy will be felt with his widow and brother in their loss—thina Gazelle,
