LIFE AMONG LONDON POOR,

A notable address on "Christian Socialism' was delivered in Victoria, B, C, early last month by Rev. Mark Guy Pearse. The lecturer dealt principally with the condition of the poor of Western London, the miserable, hopeless life of large numbers being described in

graphic terms. Rev. Mr. Pearse's remarks were enlivened by numerous anecdotes of a humorous character, which were thoroughly appreciated judging by the merriment they

created.

Referring to the size of London, the speaker said: "Think of what the whole of London means-6,500,05 people-the world has seen nothing like it," in the whole of the Dominion, a country as big as Europe, the population was unly 5,000,000, over a million less than the

number of people living crowded together in "You can't begin to think what this

In South Africa, a country as large

as thirteen Great Britains, there are not os many people as in England's metropolis. If you start from Victoria and walk towards the north of the Island until you cover half the distance, and then imagine that all that district is thirly populated, house joining house, you have a better idea of the crowded condition of the masses in London. Every room in each house where the poor live is occupied by a family. He told of how sometimes several families would occupy one room, and mentioned one specific case where three families were living in this way. "They lived peaceably," he remarked, "until one family took in a boarder, and then there was a row."

One laughed at the humor of it, but could not help shuddering at the horror. If all the churches in London were filled to their utmost capacity there would be a population left out as large as would be seen in travelling from one end to the other of the Dominion. It would be asked what was London doing to allow such a condition of affairs. Although every effort was being made, it was found impossible to keep up to the steady increase in the population. In London a large proportion of the masses of people were in circumstances which make life not worth living.

The reverend lecturer asked the audience whether a man who does his-fair share towards the welfare of the nation has earned a fair share of the pleasures and leisure of life. Those present answered with loud and continued applause.

The speaker went on to show the miser. able life of those living in the slums of

DONE BY TRYING,

Nobody can tell what he can do till he tries. When a thing ought to be done the modern spirit moves us to keep working away at it until it is done. In the face of this idea the "impossible vanishes. Where there's a will,

there's a way. If we could but rob cod liver oil of its sickening taste and smell and then combine it with two or three other ingredients we should possess the hest remedy in the world for certain diseases that are now practically incurable." So said a famous English physi- cian twenty-five years ago

"But it will never

be done," be added. "You can no more turn

end liver oil into a pleasant palatable medicine. than you can turn the Corfi b itself into a Bird of Paradise." Yet he lived to admit that in

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION the "impossible" had been accomplished. It is palatable as honey and contains all the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites, Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. This remedy is freed from the bad peculiarities Dr. Frothingham so detested, and t is precisely the splendid medicine he wished for. Use it freely and confidently for Anemia, Hysterin, Wasting Complaints, Blood Impuri, ties, Asthma, and Throat and Lung Troubles. Dr. W. H. B. Aikins, F. R. C. P., London, v. D. C. M., Victoria University,-M. B.. Toronto University, - Consulting Physician to Home for Incumbles, Physician 10 Toronto General Hospital, says: "I am much pleased to state that the results from using Wampole's Preparation of Cod Liver Oil have been uniformly satisfactory; it appealed to me as being prepared according to correct scien- tific principles." It increases the appetite and influences the digestion of food; it is delicious to take, will not disappoint you and is effective from the first dose. "It represents the dawn of progress." London. Their home was a single room in HONGKONG, SHANGHAI, SINGAPORE. which they slept, washed, etc., etc. No matter how they strove they found it impossible to better their condition. The only thing they could look forward to, after such a life, was the workhouse, Here Rev. Mr. Pearse remarked: "I know that drink often drivesmen to the slums, but I think that the slums just as often drive men to drink." Under these circumstances the public houses became natural resort; they were at least warm and comfortable. Them wat na worse waste of money than the erection of large churches which were opened only once a week. The doors should be thrown open every evening, and efforts made to gather together those who would otherwise spend their time in public houses. No church, however sacred or beautiful, was too good for the so-called riff-raff Church people were so apt to ask men whether they were prepared to die," forgetting to in- quire whether they "were able to live." There were two classes of socialism. One was that of hate, which said "what is thine is mine," and the other was that of love, which said "what is mine is thine."

Rev. Mr. Pearse next spoke of the sel- fishness of some Christians. All they seem. ed

their own sal- to care about was

"I vation. In this connection he said: count that I am nearer the Lord Jesus Christ if like Moses I would have myself blotted from the Book of Life for the sake of others. All religion should begin with in dividual salvation, but the religion that ends there cheats itself. The socialis: question would have to be dealt with sooner or later. It was a question of "Down with everything that is up, or up with everything that is down," As it was coming sooner or later he advised Christians to bring about relief by assisting the oppressed. Continuing, he described a place in the slums of London known as "Little Hell," which was worse than any other resort. Three of "The Sister of the People," an organiration with which Rev. Mr. Pearse is connected, were at work there continually. He gave a number of Incidents where the efforts of the sisters were successful in rescuing men And women. He also told of a step that bad been taken to make the lives of the children of the slums brighter. A sister called at the rooms every day and took charge of the children during the parents' absence. Before this children were either left to run the streets or were tied to the bed posts all day with a little bread and water within reach.
