The death is announced of Sir Michael Herbert, British Ambassador at Washington.
[H. E..the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Henry Herbert, K.C.C, CB. succeeded the late Lord Pauncefate as British Ambassador at Washington carly in June of last year. He had previously spent nearly five years of bis diplomatic carcer there as Secretary of Lega tion and chargé d'affires from 1888 to 1893, and during that fer od he not only secured the confidence and regard 'nf the American public men with whom his duties brought bam into official contact, and I ecame a popular figure in. American Society, but he als gained in a romarkable agree the personal friendship of distinguished citizens like President Roosevelt, Secretary Hay and Sealer Lod.e.
