Kawachi Maru, charged a Japanese tailor with stowing himself on his vessel on a trip from Singapore to Hongkong. it seems that the tailor secreted himself on board ship, and his presence was only dis- covered the next day, when he took a seat at The dining table. He said he paid his passage after the ship left Singapore, on the 30th ult, but as he was unable to show any papers to that effect and was pennyless and had no baggage, the Magistrate sentenced him to 14 days' hard

According to an Ottawa cable, dated 14th ult., Major-General Gascoigne, Commanding the Forces at Hongkong, has written to the Minister of Trade and Commerce, s'ating that the War Office supplies at Hongkong include about 30,000 pounds of foar per month. This, he says, may be suppl.ert in lots of 1,000 sacks of 50 pounds each, and he has advised both Canada and Australia of the contract, in order. that they may tender. The flour now supplied is mostly from the United States, and he hopes that arrangements may be made whereby a portion or the whole of this trade may go either to Canada or Australia. The flour is manufact- ured into bread by the military at Hongkong,

ROBERTS AT THE CHINESE CLUB.

In the presence of a large number of lucal cuists Mr. John Roberts gave an exhibition game of 1,030 up at the Chinese Club last evening, conceding 650 start to Mr. E. H. Hinds, bis opponent. The game was followed with keen interest, applause being frequently accorded both to the veteran and the local player. The principal breaks during the evening were: Roberts, 35, 44, 87, 41, 70, 54, 74, 62, 46 and 167; Hinds; 29, 23 and 26 With Hinds at ur Roberts was standing at 829 and upon going to the table raised the score by brilliant nursing to 996, when he failed with a cushion shot. Hinds replied with 14, bringing his total to 945, and Roberts, taking a stroke across the table, off the cushion, for a pocket off

(3) Notices for repairs or alterations to the drains of to houses have been received, 94 were carried forward from 1953 making a total of 154 in hand.during the quarter. Of these 717 have been completed and 4 cancelled huvi g 76 to carry forward,

(4), Certificates have been granted under Sec- tion 84 of Ordinance 13 of 1501 for 137 new houses that have been built in accordance with the provisions of that Ordinance,
