By the substitution of her new engines and boiler, she is still further reduced in draught and she can silinintain her reputation as the lightest draught s'enmer on the Ti nisin trade.

Messrs, S. C. Fambam, Boyd & Co, Ld, undertook the work of tripling this steamer and have completed the job inside of sixty days, which is a very creditable performance.

The same firm have now in hand the con- verting of the C. M.S. N. Co.4 6.5. Chiyven (re-boilering and tripling) in a similar manner to the as. Kwanglah. With the other altera tions to houses and passenger accommodation this will make the s.s. Chi-Yuen quite up to date.

Daring the interval, the master of the shop interviewed other tailors, with the result that a bargain was struck the very next day. In the course of the current week, nearly all the tailors in the Colony have been com mandeered, and we understand the contract for supplying the uniform expires on Monday. THE STRANDED "VICTORIA"

Standard will soon be adopted, but many tin producers are not favourably disposed to it, whereas the public generally are demanding it. Of course the more dollars to the pound the greater is the inducement to produce tin, but 1 very much question if the price of silver has had any important influence on the production of tin in the Straits, but consider the expansion of trade is America is mainly the cause of the ich price now ruling.

For many years the bulk of the tin produced in the Straits has been sinelted at Singapore by the Straits Trading Co., but there has heen some competition from three or four smelters in Perak. However, an American Company will shortly enter the market, and a keen competi- tion will assuredly follow. The Americans in lead shipping the ores to New York, where they are erecting large smelting works,
