YARN TRADE AND YARN, BROKERS..pines

To The Emirer of the "Hewakong Telrezání," DEAR SIR,-There are many firms in Hong kong with head offices in Bombay who deal extensively in yarn. This trade has been in existence for a number of years past. There are some large firms doing the bulk of the whole trade. They receive shiploads of the staple by almost every steamer. Those in the line as those outside it who have been observ. ing the trend of business have noted one very remarkable thing. It may be considered strange that for so many years past these

My remarks are, directed against the method of procedure which dictuted the action of the f amers of the petition and by wh ch 1, in com. mon with a large proportion of those who have supported it, have been misted in regard to the reference made in the p-tition to the move shrewd merchants have encouraged a sort of! ment initiated by the Honourables Dr. Ho Kai and Wei Yuk, Me Fung Wa Chuen and others for the establishment of a High School for the Chinese in Hongkong.

This movement had its origin in a pelit on presented to the Colonial Secretary and dated the 2nd March, 1901. The petition was signed by the two Chinese members of the Legislative Council supported by six ther Chinese gentle. men. It purported to have been written Mon behalf of an important and influential section

of the Chinese community," and pressed upon the attention of Government "the urgent need for a suitable English School for the education of the children-both boys and girls-of the upper classes of the Chinese resident in this Colony." monopoly as regards brokering business. One 6rm has ane fixed broker of its own. In some cases one man is brokering to a number of houses. On the face of it this is a monopoly | whose only recommendation is shortsighted- ne 5. Healthy competition in every depart- ment of business tends to a healthy growth of that business. By one broker monopolising one or more firms there is no room left for healthy competition and its resultant profits in the shape of higher prices. It would be to the interest not only of local importers

but of the Bombay mill owners to give a free scope 10 competition. In exchayr, share, property and kindred transactions the market is open to all an I sundry and the highest bidder

bas naturally the greatest-chances of success. 1n Bombay the case is quite different. The yarn market is open to all-comers. In a healthy competition each individual broker has an opportunity of showing his pluck and energy, push and perseverance knowledge of the trade, originality of suggestions and improvements, and statistical and analytical grasp. Such men in the capacity of brokers would certainly be much more appreciated by real kusiness men than mera drones. Really this is a question vitally affecting the yarn trade, the local yarn

Considerable feeling was engendered among the Chinese upon the first publication of this school petition. It was felt that be memorial ists trespassed beyond the hits of their powers when they claimed to represent the views of an important and influential section of the community" whom they really never consul.ed.
