The satisfactory settlement of the land claims so tediously, but nevertheless efficiently, conducted by the members of the Land Court, constituted by special legislation, must have evidently pre pared the way for Government lands in the Kowloon Hinterland to be offered for sale. Much has been said of Hongkong's AUSTRALIAN CLARETS AND extension, in particular thai district defined
erection of as New Kowloon, for the
connection fattories and buildings, in with local industries which the condi tions of the Colony so favourably offer to investors. Those conditions, whether regarded in the light of the extremely cheap native labour or the eminently advantageous posi tion of Hongkong, must be considered such as to afford to enterprise in the Colony every means of remunerative investment. Then the extensive waterworks which has been con- Co., templated on the other side of the Colony, and the extensive collecting areas which these works will possess practically give to the peninsula an illimitable supply of water both for domestic and industrial purposes. This is an element from the want of which in- dustries on this side of the Colony-have from time to time suffered, but benefiting from the experience of Hongkong and the abnormal growth of the population, with remarkable rapidity, our present administration, backed up by public opinion, is not likely to err in the matter of the water supply for Kowloon.

QUARRY BAY RIOT.
VERDICT ANd sentence..
The Chief Justice, Sir W, M. Goodman, this morning summed up at the Criminal Sessions in the Quarry Bay riot case, in which nineteen Chinamien were charged with intent to murder, and also with rioting. He pointed out what a serious matter it was when natives at Quarry Bay, where there are same 2,000 of them employed, took upon themselves the combined parts of witnesses, police, judges, and execu- tinners. They had brutally murdered an Indiau watchman with a lump of granite, and seriously wounded others. The curious part of it was that the watchman, who caused all the trouble,
the one who hit a China-woman with a bamboo, escaped with least bodily injury, and the man who was killed, and those seriously injured, had commited no offence at all. He reminded the jury that only six of the prisoners were identified by more than one person. A un- animous verdict of guilty was returned against the six prisoners. His Lordship sertenced the six men to two years' hard labour on the fust count, and one year on the second, the sentences to run consecutively. The other men were discharged.

Formal business having been transacted, Mr. Norbcote said that, the range they were now using was part of the King's Park and would very soon have to be given up. He understood from General Gascoigne that the Colonial Government had arranged a site for a military range and when doing so stipulated that the Association should not be forgotten. H.E. had sent for him to say that it was ini- possible to make any such arrangement, as existed at present with the Navy-fixed days and fixed hours-but suggested as a way ou! of the difficulty that they should amalgamate with the Army Rifle Association, by which they would have the use of their range at all times, as well as transport to and from the range and. other advantages. In the event of the members not accepting that proposal there remained two alternatives, either to make a new armagement with the Kavy for sharing Stoneculters' Island range which he thought they would agree would be very monvenient for them-or to find a new range for themselves, which might be an impossibility. Major Baker-Brown added that the present range would not be racated pntil the other was ready, which meant about "welve months.
Mr. Northcote then formally moved that, the H.K.R.A. amalgamate with the A.R.A.
Mr. D. Macdonald seconded He thought the H.K.R.A. could not do better than amalga mate. The terms offered by the military woje most generous and would very greatly assist in
overcoming the dificulty of having the range so far away from Hongkong.
Mr. W. Stewart-What about our funds? Our balance is something like $600. We do not want to amalgamate with an Association that has no dellam at all." (Laughter.)
Mr. Northcote assured Mr. Stewart that the iden of the A. RA. was not to ‘collar any money. The amalgamation was for the Association's benefit. The final disposition of the furds would be threshed out by the committees.
Major Baker-Drown said both Associatintis started with a certain amount in hand. The committees would no doubt see that their several interests were safeguarded.
Mo Stewart also remarked that he would have liked to have seen the Navy included."
Major Baker-Brown stated that if the Navy liked to come in, there did not seem to be any dificulty about it. But that was questionable, as they had a range of their own.
The resolution was agreed to unanimously. On the motion of Mr. J. Parkes, seconded by Mr. W. G. Stackwood, it was agreed to hold that decision as final, without calling a confirmatory meeting.
On the motion of the. Mr. Northcote, tha following committee was elected -Messrs. Andrew, Parkes, Stackwood, Colour-Sergeant Cross, Messrs. Macdonald W. Stewart, and Chapman.
Major Baker-Brown moved, the re-election of Mr. Northcote as Hon. Secretary.
Mr. Stackwood seconded.
Mr. Stewart, in supporting the motion, said that during the time Mr. Nonhcote had been' Secretary the, Association had gone on flourishing. (Applause.) There was no han

The motion was carried unanimously,
Mr. Northcote said it had been his intention not to seek re-election, but as they had put it 40 very kindly he would he pleased to carry on for another twelve months. (Applause.)
