These constituted the only engineering difficulies, and their accom plishment has rendered the line a complete success, as the road is workable in all weathers, and one pair of bullocks can draw a load of 4 (trucks" of quant' weighing nearly J8 tons. Owing to the rough weather on the coast at tekan, the first portion of the tram-line material did Lot reach the mines til the end of May, and it was not until the end of july that we had sufficient rails to complete the line.

Prospecting--The prospecting of the conces sion was practically at a. standstill at the beginning of the year, owing to sickness. In February, one of the Europeans was able to go out to Tualan, where we can trace a run of stone on the surface for a distance of about a mile. A good deal of trenching was done on this, at times with good prospects, but there was nothing permaneat,

*In May, a reef shewing goll was reported at Goa, and the prospecting party worked there for scie little time with the same results as at Tualan. Mr. Moran, the prospector, who had been unwell since the Christmas, er uid carry on no lunger, and accordingly left the country, Mr. Murchison has since been engaged pro- specting to the north of Swah Hill, and between Swah and Panggong. Early in November, a reef 3 fet thick was discovered in Kalampong Valley, but unfortunately it cat aut after sinking 15 fect on it.

Further searching in that locality his.shewn a very large quantity of crushing stuff, and evidently the cap of a reef Samples taken at daferent points indiente that the whole of the stone is carrying gold. There is no defined freef as yet, but I anticipate that from the surface alone we shall have sufficient store to keep the mill going night and day for some lime. SOMETHING ABOUT "BARGAINS IN GLASSES."

There is no such thing as "bargains" in 35ere glasses. Glasses which are worth "Si for :

this week only" are not worth any more the next week or any other week, in fact they are | never worth the money asked for, or better still are too dear at any price. Your eyes need a thorough examination by a reliable Eye Specialist before you get your glasses, and this examination is worth some money. To get the right glasses is worth everything--wearing wong glasses means killing your eyesight Your eyes are your life and no bargain-counter article.

Captain E. Prehn, will leave for the above plices TO-MORROW, the 7th instant, at Daylight.

His Excellency Kung, late Prefect of Kwong THE Imperial Gennan Mail Steamship Chau, will soon leave Canton, His successor, Sham, has arrived and taken over-the-seals of of Many of the Cantonese are very sorry to lose Mr. Kung. During the last two years Mr. Kung has had to do with the government of Kwangtung, first as confidential advisor to Viceroy Tay Mu and later as the Prefect of Kwong Chau. He has been a friend to pro- gress and encouraged all movements for the education of the people. His proclamation at the time of the threatened rice famine last autumn will long be remembered. Probably no other official has ventured to urge the

T people to refrain from spending money on idol festivities and devote the money to relief purposes and at the same time making himself the sole person against whow the anger of the gods should be directed for this neglect of them. We need such men as Mr. Kung here and it is to be hoped that he may yet find some position in Canton,

A PETITION,

A number of influential persons have peti- tioned the Tsin Ilau Kuk to have a tax imposed upon any man who binds the feet of lugd ughters. This is the one way of showing disapproval of the practice of tool-binding.

To this same connection it is interesting.to to know that the Chinese in this province, are anxious to do away with the bathersome queue. Your correspondent has been. asked by a score and more of Chinese within the last two weeks |whether it was true or not, that the Emperor has cut his queue and was dressed as a for- eigner. The native papeis some time ago re- ported this to be a fact. The object these Chi- nese had in asking, this information was that if true they tan would cut the queue but still wear the Chinese dress.
