TURF TOPICS.
On a heavy course which, in certain places was rather wet, or course as a certain punster was heard to remark, a good deal of training by both China ponies and walers was done this morning. The immediate effect of the nasty weather was evident in the absence of any. member of the fair sex, a number of whom we were so pleased to welcome on the course the other morning. A heavy bank of seemingly impenetrable mist hung over the valley, and it required the lynx-eye of the time keeper in order to follow the progress of each horse as he was ridden-over the course in the far distance In spite of the favour shown to other entrants for the Derby, I still adhero to my previously $4.43946 expressed opinion, from a careful observation of the horse's performance, that Brilliant stands without an opponent for the trophy The following is the record taken-down 30 day

(Sd) CLARA ATKINSON,
Honorary Treasurer. Audited and compared with cash book, and cabli vouch rs and found caricci,
(Sd) HILGrove C. Nicolle, Hongkong, 17th January, 1901. Continuing, His Cordship said:-1 am glad to see that the balance in hand at the com- mencement of the present year amounts to $1, 648,06, which 'is some $1,600 better than that with which 19 z was started. But I should like to point out that, had it not been for the $1,800 accruing from the Subscription Dance the position of the Society would have been some $200 worse than it was at the beginning of 1902. That is to say, that although you have more now than you had at the beginning of the year by $1,600, ou received $1,800 from the results of a particular dance. Sir Thomas Jackson, I noticed, said from t e chair 1st year, I am quoting his words, "It is all very well to have a subscription dance now and again, but, of corse, you cannot have that always.” That is an exceptional source cline me, and it is necessary that we should remember that the ordinary and donations, and therefore I cannot help feeling regular sources of income are subscriptions and that if the people of Hongkong really did realise what excellent work was being done by this Society, even to a limited extent, the list of subscribers and donors would be considerably indebted to the Rev. Mr. France and to the increased. I am sure that we pre all very much other gentlemen of the Reference Committee, upon them in making inquiries into deserving Cases, and I am sure they have inquired with the greatest care into all cases referred to them. Charity, unless given with discrimina- tion, is almost-useless. I shall be glad now if some honorary member will move the adoption of the report and the passing of the accoun's as set forth in the balance sheet.
