[There has been many repo dantests of the Humberts, but it now appears to be an accomplished fact, and the clear ne up of this extraordinary myst fication and amazing swindle is evidently imminent It may be rememb red by those who have followed the remukable story that in the early eighties, Therese Daurigane, a young peasant girl living near Toulouse, told her neighbours tha', under the will of obert Henry Crawford, a wealthy American, she had become sole heir to a fortune of 00,00 000 francs

She was then married to M. Humbert, but the will was opposed by two nephews of the legee, and pending an ami- cb'e settlement of the dispute, Mme. TO PAY OFF INDEMNITY.

For the last two years this good old mine has been going in the dogs (like several more of the old Pabang gold minés). In fact this

decadence dates from the time the two experts went to report on the property; and it would seem from the rumours about, that theirs was the first initiative step to close down the mine.

Reviewing the work on the mine during the past two years, one can only come to the conclusion that there is some truth in such rumours. What has been done in developing

published, very little driving on lodes or sink. the lods, and opening out more ore ground? So far as we can see from the reports

ing has been done. Consequently no ore badies of importance have beco opened out for stoping purposes, nor have any great dis. coveries been made in the crosscuts. Yet milling ges on the same as ever, and the quantity of quartz taken from Bukit Koman and Bukit Hitam must have very greatly diminished the reserves of ore. This style of working cannot go on for very much longer. Unless new ore bodies are discovered the energetic manager will be unable to keep the mill going.

The report published in the Straits Times on the 2ntinst is worded so that some people would consider it a good one, but others do

not. Në mention is made of the further sink-

ing of Rukit Koman or Bukit Hitam shafts, or of the driving from the bottom of these shafts. either does the report show that any new. ground is being opened out The Company. has a further capital of 3d. a share on 150 000 to call up, this would give a sum of nearly £9,000. Allowing for shares relinquished, and considering the present rate of exchange, the

Company would have approximately $100,000 to work with. Why do they not call this work the mine ia up and

a proper manner? It is a generally accepted fact 38aarongst qualified mining men who under

stand the circumstances and the locality, that te only prospect of saving Raub is by ainking a main shaft 10 a depth of 500 or 600 ft. At- 395 this depth the developments should be sufficient to prove if the property is worth 4.05 further working or not. Can it, however, be a fact that as rumour says-their inten.ion is to close down the mine?

4.10

1.15

Many improvements have been made by the Manager to reduce expenditure to minium, and he has succeeded in 240 reducing the cost of mining to $7,61 per 1.50 ton, and he says a battery return of 3.24 140 dwis, of gold per ton should suffice to cover cost. This is the lowest average payable out- 4.50 put per ton obtained in Palang, and looks very 1.45 well on paper; but how has it been brought

about?—ly dispensing with Europeans and employing nat ves to do Europeans' work. It is possibly right from an economical point of view 1.20 during an emergency --but will it pay in the 1.40 end? It is a matter of common knowledge hat 1.60 gold enough is now being and has been for Years past stolen from. Raub to pay for more 0.75

than one European's salary monthly; and without European supervision in the mine, ago and at the mill, day and night, a far larger quantity will be stolen. The Sikh watchman is generally in collusion with the Chinese miners, and will allow a Chinaman to get away with any quantity of gold in return for a few dollars bribe.

WAS won, both the Directors, and the Government were satisfied. Neither looked to the future of the mine. This may or may not be 80.

Pahang is in a very poor state and will, remain so as long as the Government continues to neglect the gold mining industry. Had Raub been under the Australian Government- evin in the Back Blocks-a main shaft would have been sunk 500 or 6cft. in a third of the time that the Raub Mine has now been work ing. Moreover, the Australian Government

assists miners in winking such deep shafts, sinking under a certain level. That is to by paying them pound for pound for say they pay an equivalent to the amount of money spent by the miners in sinking such a it does not even compel the managers to work shalt Here the Government does nothing. the mine in a legitimate manner, Now, how- ever, in view of the fact that Pahang has got a competent Warden of Mines, it is to be trusted that he will be induced to, draw up a. code of. rules that will benefit mining generally.

It may not be generally known that many of the rich Chinese in the country have been buying Raub scrip and lacking it up, and if all such shares held by them were registered in their owners' names I think it would be found they held more than half of the mine. At any rate they hold a big interest and will have something to say when-if ever-it comes to a to outsiders.
