ENTERS HONGKONG IN DISTRESS;" /
The British steamship James Brand, Captiešu..... A. Torraine, arrived here yesterday from Shanghai with the steamer Tas Lee in low. She picked up the vessel in a disabled com dition on her voyage down, and from what we' have been able to gather, if appears that while in Lai 14:23 N. Long 112, 13 E on the 18th October, the ship came across the German stemmer Tai Lee, with Goo Chinese passengers, in a distressed condition. As the vessel was practically unable to move, she signalled for. assistance, and wished to be towed to this port. The Jumes Brand Linuuediately steamed to within a respectable distance, and managed, after a considerable amount of labour, o lower towing hawseis. There was then a fresh inconsoon blowing, which made the work of connecting the hawsers and ropes a difficulty, All went well until the next day, when the hawser parted, and, after working seven hours. with a high se running, they were re connected. The work was made more difficult by the fact that lines had to be made fast to each vessel to enable them to keep in position. On the oth, a fresh difficulty arose, for the patent steering gear of the James Brand gave way. The engines were imm: diately eased, and the rudder, for a tiine, had to be worked by the hand gear. Repairs were, however, effected, and the two vessels arrived safely in ilang kong harbour yesterday,
