The Coal Famine in America. LONDON, October: 6th The Morgan Shipping Trust has arranged for the purchase in England of 50,000 tons of the best domestic coal for immédiate ship: ment to the United States in its own ships to relieve the suffering resulting from the strike of coal miners, and the Dominion - Company of Canada is sending 100,000 tons, President Roosevelt and the members of the U. S. Cabinet had a two hours' con- "ference yesterday morning on the subject of the coal miners' strife, but the proceedings have not been divulged.
The Governor of Pennsylvania has an nounced that he is determined to maintain order even if he is compelled to call out the entire State Militia.

A HEARTY WELCOME.
The hired transport Wakool with the 1st Battalion of Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment), the old "Forty-fifths," arrived from South Africa vs Singapore at seven o'clock this inorning. The vessel woored in the Ad- miralty anchorage, and the troops landed at A the Commissariat Pier at abou nãon. light & Louveyed them ashore, the men sitting on top of a mound of baggage, and when some of the proceeded, to land, with their rifles at the trail, it reminded, one of The South African War lustrations, as they scrambled up over the, pdes of brown baggage. The Band of the Royal Welch Fusiliers played them up to Murray Barracks where preparations had been made by a squad of fore-runncis, under the command of the Lieutenant quartermaster of the regiment, whe linded at about to 30a.m. The arrived roops consist of some 370, od 1 mes and 19 officers, under the commarid of Lieut.-Col. Wylly, C.B., who is accompanied by his wife and daughter. Licut-Cof. Wylly's term expires in February 1903, On the Band if the Sherwoods landing they were invited to a reception by the Band of the soyal Welch Fusiliers, and a splendid! luncheon was ordered from Min. W. B. Waters, of Thomas' Grill, for the occ..sion.

A-bo-lh, Armstrong shell which had stood at the vestibule of Viscount Yoshikawat's house in ibe Azabu district of Tokyo for 9 years, exploded suddenly at noon on the 25th Sept. wounding a maid-servant so badly that she expired shortly afterwards in hospital, and slightly injuring the Viscount's factor, who was seated in a room near the vestibule. The shell must have been made soine 30 years ago. It was dug up in Etchiujima, at the time of building the Naval College, and its explosive elements having been entirely re-at_5-15_L_M moved-so, at least, the Japanese newspapers
Say-it was presented as a curiosity to Viscount Yoshikawa, such shells having become obsolete.
All this is

unless the shell was of some extraordinary
kind. The old Armstrong shell was built up with cubical segments fitting together accordance with the arch principle, so that, while opposing no strength against the shel: could not be crushed by any external action of an internally disruptive force, the
