Mr. J. Macdonald, one of the finalists, which prevented his being present, and necessitated the postponing of the final tie. The tie for the third prize, between Mr. T..W. Robertson and Mr. J.-Kinross, did not attract a great deal of attention play being of a very one-sided and uninteresting nature. Mr. J. Kinross emerged the winner of the contest by 21 points to his opponent's 9. A number of other games were played during the afternoon, and on the whole a very pleasant time was spent. At the con- clusios of the afternoon's sport Mr. W. C, Jack. the vice president of the Club, introduced Mrs. Milroy, and called upon that lady to present the prize-a ceremony which she performed in a graceful manner. Miss Lily Logan then pre- sented Mrs. Milroy with a handsome bouquet, after which the winner of the prize returned "thanks and "called for three-cheers for Mrs.

The final tie, it may be said is indefinitely postponed. It may interest bowlers to know that both finalists (fr. Macdonald and Mr. A. Laverton) are left-handed players.
SHOOTING ACCIDENT AT KOWLOON.
was
Early yesterday morning some excitement was caused in town by a report which got abread and gained wide circulation to the effect that a party of Europeans had deliberately shot and wounded a band of Chinese paddy workers at Kowloon city. Investigation proved that there were some grounds for the story. The gentle men in question had been after snipe and two of them were firing over the paddy fields. A bird rose and one of the two sponsmen fired.
ust as the trigger was pulled two of the Chinese, who had been hitherto invisible, lifted their heads above the embankment of an adjain- ng fi eid and were unfortunate enough to stop a few of the pellets. The accident naturally alarmed the Europeans and they immediately went to see what had happened. They were much relieved to find that the injuries sustained were slight and that the Chinese were willing to accept a few dollars as salve for their wounds and allow the matter to drop.

One of the head teachers left a few days ago. There is a good deal of dissatisfaction expressed with the teaching. A native pa per "took off" one of the teachers some- time ago. The teacher was represented as asking. the class why a certain body of water was called the "Red Sea." And the explana- tion given is because the water is "red." The same regarding the "Black" sea. The water is "black." Perhaps there is no truth in this story but it points to the fact that the teachers are not qualified for their positions. There is in fact no system at all. There are 160 students divided into our classes of 40 each. The scientific apparatus which was ordered some weeks ago has arrived and is lying about the building in boxes. The complaint is that there is not sufficient money to employ a foreigner to superintend the college. The truth is that more money is wasted through ignorance than would pay a properly qualified foreigner. Like most children the Chinese will not take, advice but must experiment for themselves. The experiment is likely to prove costly.
