“HONGKONG AND ITS KING, V
Celebrating the Coronation.
LIGHTNING, THUNDER AND RAIN. "
The eventful celebrations of Saturday are now left to mark a page in the annals of our Colony. Hongkong did justice to the occasion, and may well be proud of her contribution to the Empire's celebrations. The programane of events marking this epoch in national affurs was drawn up by the Coronation Committee with every care and attention, and many of the items had the merit of usefulness as well as re-appointed to act as Police Magistrate in the being interesting. The scheme arranged for the day originally fixed for the Coronation celebrations comprised a meeting of the Executive and Legislative Councils at which a telegram to the King would be voted, a service in St. John's Cathedral, the unveiling of a statue of. H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught, a roview of troops at the Happy Valley, and a Chinese flower show on the Praya. This was to have been followed the next day by a levée at. prayers of my people for my recovery "were heard, and I now offer up my deepest gratitude to Divine Providence for having preserved my life and given me strength "to fulfil the important duties which devolve "upon me as the Sovereign of this great Em- "pire." This was the text of a letter which the King wrote to his people on the occasion of Their Majesties' coronation, and this was the message flashed around the Empire the day preceding that great event. Whether on the shores of the Atlantic or Pacific, the Indian or the Arctic Oceans, the myriads of British subjects have united in one vast brotherhood and celebrated the enrauation of their King and his beloved Consort.. Although separated from the crowded streets_of_London_and_the venemble. Abbey at Westminster by ten thousand. miles of rolling billows, the cosmopolitan community in this fair portal of the Orient combined in one common body and joined with those beyond the seas in fer- vently acclaiming King EowaRn, as our King Our more important celebrations had already taken place, but there were. several events still remaining, and though marred by unfavourable weather, which had a depressing effect among the populace, Loyally predominated, the spirit of and Hongkong joined with her sister Colonies in congratulating the King, Fine. weather favoured the grand occasion at home and, according to our correspondent, the event was serenely consummated Although absent in the flesh many 'of us were present in the stood in the decorated thoroughfares of London watching the great pageant slowly wending its way
through the mass of patriotic subjects. We stood with a brilliant multitude beside the clustering columns and fretted windows of the Abbey and witnessed the curtain rising upon a new scene in the drama of British history. The cheering of the crowd came thundering into the sacred building and, our thoughts" drifted away to some provincial town and out into the country where smiling hamlets, nestling beneath green hills, were taking up the cheer and passing it on to wher: beneath the maple or the palm, the fir tree or the eucalyptus Britons would proudly join in the shout and send it echoing along the chair that binds together the Empire and the King.
