FRENCH SQUADRONS INA'Y

EASTERN WATERS.

Le Yacht of May 3rd has some interesting comments, to M. P. le Roll, upon the re- Organisation of the French squadrons in Eastern waters, of which we lately gave some account: He writes:-"It is none the less true that the notion of forming such a fleet in the

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JUNE 16, 1902.

It is well known, however, that large num bers of foreign guns have been offered for sale" recently, and in all probability it is this lot has found its way to Birmingham to be

stowed in safes.

Birmingham gunmakers, who discussed the matter at their half-yearly meeting were "of that opinion. Several were confident that the guns seized in, London were really old Italian

the Minister of Marine, seems a sound one..lish merchants at low figures.

They also made the suggestion that the guns were intended for use in Armenia.

We must admit that at present France does. not cut a very brilliant figure in this part of the world, in, comparison with the fleets of Eng- land and Japan. But everything must have a beginning, and it is something at least that all | THE GREAT GLOBE AT ST. And one can foresee that in years to come we shall have sufficient armoured cruisers to form in these waters a light squadron, at once homogeneous and powerful, which will be an important factor." Later on the writer of the article ut- ters a note of warning upon the subject of ex pense. "Une word in conclusion," he writes. This new organisation of the squadrons for foreign service, as well as that of the coast do. fence ships, of which we have already spoken is certainly very interesting and attractive, but if in each case we would avoid difficulty in carrying it out in practice, we must not refuse some augmentation of the personnel, and we must make up our minds to certain supple mentary estimates which may be easily com- pensated by increased economy in administra tion."-- United Service Gazette.

CANNIBAL PLANTS,

Some interesting particulara, appear in the May Chambers's Journal concerning cannibal plants and flowers, and especially the species recently discovered by Dunstan on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. As this naturalist was walking with his dog he was attracted by its cries of pain and terror, and hastening, to the rescue, found the animal held by three black sick bands which had chafed the skin to bleeding. These bands were the branches of a newly-found carnivorous plant, which has been named by Dunstan the "land octopus." The branches are described as being flexible, polished black, without leaves, secreting a viscid Avid, and furnished with a great number of suckers by which they attach themselves to their victims. This uncanny product of the vegetable kingdom is know to the natives as "the devil's poose."

DEATH TO THE MOTH,

The moth catching plant (Arougia albens) is a native of Central Africa. It was introduced into Australia quite accidentally some eight or nine years ago, and has since been extensively propagated there, it having been found that ita, white and sweet-smelling flowers attract and destroy vast quantities of moths. Its action has been found by experiment to be purely mechanical The calyx of the flower is rather deep, and the receptacle for its sweet juices is placed at its base. Attracted by the powerful scent and the prospect of honey, the moth dives down into the calyx and protrudes its proboscis to reach the tempting food. Before it can accomplish its purpose, however the proboscis is nipped between two strong, hard, black pincers which guard the passage. Once caught. there is no escape; the insect invariably per- ishes miserably.-

RIFLE IN A BIRMINGHAM SAFE SEIZED AT VICTORIA DOCKS.

A curious question affecting the export of arms and ammunition has been placed before the law officers of the Crown by the Customs nuthorities, says a home paper.

On 5th May, acting on information received from the Birmingham police, three Custom House officers at Victoria Docks and a Board of Trade departmental chief overhauled a con signment of safes forwarded to the docks from Birmingham two days previously for shipment

to Batoum.

Nothing suspicious, was at first noticed,

ANTIQUITIES IN THE SUDAN.

Mr. John Ward, F.S.A., writes to the Times from the Savile Club:-"We have all heard of the temples and pyramids at Meroe, but few were prepared, for the discovery of ruined Christian cities beyand Khattum. In the beautiful garden of the palace at Khartum, I saw a huge stone Paschal lamb, of evident Roman sulpture. Father Ohrwalder told me that this was brought from the ruins of Soba, on the Blue Nile, z5 miles beyond Khartum, in Gordon's time, and that he knew the place. which abounded with the remains of Christian temples and was once the centre of a civilized kingdom. Colonel Stanton, Governor of Khartum, found me à map of the country round Soba, with the ruins laid down. Since then he has visited the ruined' temples himself and is preparing to have them cleared from the sand, and photographed. About 80 miles north of this there are exten- siva ruins of another city-Naga-with fine temples of Roman architecture, avenues of lambs, the same as the one at Khartum, lead-

up to them. The inscriptions are in hierog. lyphs, while the composite capitals of the columns bear the cross, both at 6oba and Naga. The lamb at Khartum has a long hieroglyph text and the, cartouche of some ancient King. This inscription had not been observed before 1 discovered it on the base under the gravel. So far south, Roman work of Christian times with hieroglyph texts is à novel combination and demands further re- search, Since I left Khartum Colonel Stan ten writes me that he learns from the natives that there are many similar ruins spread all over the country, and, so miles east of Khar-

tum, sculptured rocks and inscriptions, while temples reach him." as far away as Darfur, tidings of ruins of
